I'm looking to add some storage cabinets in my garage (instead of shelves) and really like the look of something like this, where the cabinets are integrated with a simple worktop:

Does anyone know the cheapest source of such cabinets? They look essentially like wardrobes - can they be picked up cheaply from Ikea? And how about the worktop?

I appreciate their holding capacity may be limited, but I really don't need anything heavy duty.

Thanks!

I'll post a whole thread on my shelves and other ideas in my garage one of these days, but here is a preview. The lines of 'cabinets' are just metal framed shelves from Homer $75. I would STRONGLY suggest that you throw away their 3/8" particle board shelves and replace them with MDF or plywood $30. More strips of plywood for a frame, paint, oak plywood for doors $45, stain $8, Polyurethane $8, and hidden hinges $12. Total is under $200. Shelves will hold up to 800 lbs each, or 4000 lb total. Mine are bolted together with small spacers between them, and also bolted to the wall.

I still have to align the doors better and put the door pulls on, but all in all, I love them. Strong enough for engine parts or heavy boxes, but they still look good, and everything is put away. Doors help keep the dust down on the shelves.

How did you attach the plywood frames to the rack? did you just screw them down?

Yeah, just a few screws from behind. Obviously, the screws have to be short enough not to got through the plywood. The frame pieces overlayed, causing the vertical pieces of wood to have to be 1/2" and the horizontals to be 5/8" (if I remember correctly). I also used washers just to get a little more security from going through, and to help spread that load out.

Used kitchen cabinets are popular on here. I can buy them cheap all day long on Craigslist.

I bought a whole wall full for $10 a cabinet from a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store.

Paint White/Black/Gray what you want and hang'em. Countertop of your choice.

More money leftover for tools!
