Need some help; I am planning to build cabinets for my garage. I want on one wall cabinets from 4 inches off the floor to the ceiling or as high as I can go without getting in the way of the garage door tracks. On the other wall I am planning to put in at least to floor to ceiling cabinets then and 8 to 10 foot work bench type area with cabinets above that. The question I have is I do not have a welder so I am going to have to make them out of wood. What material is best to use, and does anyone have any plans on how to build cabinets?

Firebird I would recomend looking on your local craigslist for metal kitchen cabinets ( although it may be a longshot in Jacksonville :D ) . I put a wanted add on my local craigslist for them and within a month I had more cabinets than I could use . They are quite sturdy and usually with a little cleanup and some paint look really good and no welding skills are required . I painted mine with ford blue tractor and implement paint from tractor supply. I might have $100.00 invested in a garage full of cabinets at least for materials if I count my time I'm sure theres more than that but no more than I would have spent building cabinets and unlike wood these should last me a lifetime.

I built mine out of plywood (not MDF or OSB...regular 3/4 inch plywood). The small set I had scrap the other units next to the central vac I bought the wood. Nothing fancy or hard about building them. Figure out your size you want, do a little math and planning. I used plywood for the main box and faced it with 1x4 pine cut down into strips for trimming and the doors were made from plywood. I've been woodworking my whole life so I just set down and drew up a plan. The paint I got from my local Do It Best Hardware store. It's thier brand of "safety red" color in semi gloss latex. Good Luck

Rick I have 42 inch wall cabinets in my garage now that I put in when I first bought the house but I have found they are not that deep to hold all the stuff I want to hide.

sjsfire those look good can you post a pic of one of them with the door open so I can get an odea on now to trim them out.

I'm making something like these next month. The paper magazine has slightly different plans, which use pre-fab hanging closet doors, and seem easier to build.
