My first post here. I've seen some other people mention garagejournal.com on some of the other forums I read so when I started to research storage for my garage I came here to check out some stuff.

I originally was thinking of picking some stuff from Home Depot\Menards etc, but I see the quality is not too highly thought of here.

I saw some posts were people used lateral file cabinets and thought that was good idea. While finding some deals on those I also found a bunch of cabinets like below.

Which would you rather have lateral cabinets or these or maybe a combination? They are 24"(deep I believe)X36"X34"

First, WELCOME to GJ!!!

Please put your location in your profile.

Now, as to cabinets....

What you use, and where you use it, is ENTIRELY up to you, and your needs and requirements.

The quantity, type, location and use depends on what you want to accomplish.

Every type of cabinet is a possibility.

So tell us everything about your uses. Show us photos of your layout and spaces.

IMHO, Cabinet choices in a workshop, are influenced by a multitude of factors, they include among other things, budget, esthetics, intended contents, availability, skill levels of the builder/installer, and other important considerations.

In the garage at my home, the cabinets were originally builder installed in the kitchen and were salvaged during a remodel.

The cabinets in my workshop came from Home Depot, they are "good enough" for their purpose and have a uniform appearance.

A lot of garages make use of cabinets found on Craig's List.

A good coat of paint can do a lot for their appearance.

My space is your basic two door attached garage. Attached are the two walls that I got to work with. At the moment it is very messy.

Most of the cabinets probably need to go on the side wall, but I have to be able to still open the doors on truck (Tundra Crewmax).
That area definitely needs to be narrower book shelf width style storage. I'm thinking of maybe moving my shovels etc. there.

The cardboard box, and the old changing table definitely needs to go.

I'd consider putting the wall cabinets on the wall opposite the garage doors. They way they'll be above the hoodline of vehicles and you don't have to worry about it.

Have you got a shed for all those yard tools?

And how many cabinets do you need?

What are you putting in them.

Lay out what you have, and design the cabinets or shelves or wall storage around them.

Are you going to do anything else in that garage? Working on cars? Shop?Etc.?

Are you going to insulate and heat it?

Personally, my first step would be to decide on my uses. Then sort and move different categories of things to their appropriate places. For guys who want to use their garages as shop space or work on their cars, one good thing to do is to get the yard tools and kids toys out and into a shed. Even a lean to shed is good for this.

Then get just the quantity of cabinets needed for the things that need to go in them.

What are your uses going to be?

Do you need a workbench?

How big is your garage?

What cars have to fit in it?

I have more questions than answers.
Welcome !

Depending on the price I would be all over those. I would also put casters on them. It would help you move them around to clean and to use as needed. During warm weather you can take projects inside and out with ease. You can even cut a board for the top that could store on the back for when you need a wood top.

As mention if you can find or build another spot for lawn care, toys, etc that would help you a bunch. Since you are looking at cabinets you know you have the need to get things up of the ground and organized.

Show use what you decide.

Don't forget to check you local Habitat for Humanity Restore. I found some cabinets that came out of a doctor's office. Bombproof construction and no one wanted them because they were institutional looking. I got 6 base cabinets and 3 uppers for $50. Not the prettiest, but a coat of paint (leftover from another project) and I had a good set up for less than one of the cabinets I was looking at elsewhere.

Hard to beat a deal like that, on 24-inch deep cabinets. Bczygan makes good points to consider. My advice, get a tape measure and some grid paper, and plan your layout of your space for storage, work areas, etc. Then walk around and think how you would work in that space, after you added the cabinets. But consider the space you have before you buy cabinets, so you know what size cabinet to get.

I made a workbench from used office cabinets, and I'm very happy with how it turned out.
