Hi Guys ,
I have a seasonal vehicle & wanted to put down an indoor/outdoor carpet in the garage. Just to keep the concrete moisture down ( mostiure barrier). My question is, do you think that the excessive heat from the catalytic converters would ignite any type of mat/carpet? I thought nothing of it until a firefighter friend said something. I was planing on a couple of Walmart green patio carpets. Any advice would be GREAT !!! Thanks

I would put plastic under the carpet so the carpet has less exposure to moisture. You said your car is normal height, I would not worry about the cat starting a fire. If it was really low, let it cool down before parking it.

I'd think a piece of carpet would hold any moisture rather than block it. That said, if it's a seasonal vehicle that would infer it won't be run during the winter, so heat from the catalytic converter shouldn't be an issue.

That is the reason the put heat shields under the CATs.
They were concerned about farmers driving out into hay fields and setting fire to the grass.

If the cars were tested in high, dry grass and passed, I wouldn't worry about wet plastic.

I have used scrap carpet to catch winter melt off for years without any problems.

I know quite a few people that have carpet in their garage from
When they redid their inside they put the old in the garage. No issues other than when it gets wet it starts smelling like wet dog.

Take a look at 1/2" 3'x3' rubber gym mats. Real gym mats, not the snap together foam type.

I have them in my garage. They are great. They are easy to clean, waterproof, and pretty much indestructible.

I'm curious what you used here specifically. We used to sell higher end gym flooring but we always discouraged people from using in automotive applications. Are internal testing showed that actual rubber did not do well with automotive fluids. Your practical experience demonstrates otherwise, so I am curious

Also if moisture builds up under the cheap rubber gym mats they are like being on ice, broke my *** more then once. Lol

To the OP, Dollar Tree sells rubber backed 18" x 18" carpet tiles for a buck apiece. I use them in my garage bathroom and under my bikes. Best part is that for a buck when one gets cruddy I pitch it and put a new one down. Also they stay in place so that's a plus.

The carpet they use for marine environments. Inside cruiser boats, on gangplanks and walkways.
