First off, hello to all. This is my first post in the forum. First time poster, long time stalker. I've learned quite a bit searching the forum over the past few months, but feel it's time to begin to participate, and what better way to do it than asking a ridiculously difficult question?!
I'm finally getting around to remodeling my two car (26' x 20') attached garage, and have picked up many fantastic ideas from other posts. One of which I'd like to do is utilize my attic for light storage. Unfortunately, now that my garage is gutted, I'm seeing what I'm up against.
Forgive the terminology, as I am not a carpenter. My rafters are 26' 2" x 6", spaced 32" o.c. I have no idea how these haven't snapped in half, as I highly doubt they are doing much of anything. I question if they can even hold the 5'8" drywall let alone any plywood or weight up top. Does anybody have any ideas for how to rectify this situation? I doubt Menards sells 26' 2" x 6" to split the difference, thus giving me 16" o.c. rafters. If I went 2" x 12", I'd still be 32" o.c. on the top side, and 16" o.c. on bottom, thus making it easier and better to drywall, but not helping with the attic storage. Can you even run 3/4" plywood at 32" o.c. spacing?
I've tried to use the search function, and picked up a few pointers, but they are almost all geared towards individual situations. Does anybody know of any carpentry 101 sites I could look at to educate myself a little better to this, so I can give educated answers to my buddies in the future when the topic arises?
I'll attach pictures if requested tomorrow. My goal is to get to it quickly, as snow will be flying up here withing two months. Thanks in advance for any and all assistance, and I look forward to sharing what I learn with other newbs in the future and picking up more and more great ideas from the folks on here.
