Garage ceiling ideas

I have a 28x24' garage,and am looking for ideas on what material to us for the celing. The ceiling has Kraft Face R19 Fiberglass Insulation. The walls have OSB except for the wall attached to the house while is sheetrock.
I know that I can use sheetrock n the ceiling,and some people use OSB.
I was thinking about using vinyl soffit. ANY thoughts on this...OR any ideas about other material?

Sheetrock or OSB is a widely debated topic here. There's probably 4 major types of ceilings by the members here.

drywall
OSB
metal siding
nothing

Don't forget plastic or vinyl sheeting for a ceiling. It looks like metal but is lighter.

No need to over think it....drywall.....it's fire rated so it would slow down any fire trying to get to the attic....easy to put up...cheap...easy to cover....easy to cut out holes for lights.

OSB is NOT fire proof....

I'm in the same boat. Still considering drywall or metal sheeting. I have a lot of ceiling outlet boxes, so cutting those in is a consideration. Also need to consider that the overhead door supports will need to be removed/replaced on top of the new ceiling surface.

Drywall is relatively easy to cut an place, but a little more of a pain to finish since I am already "moved in". I am not currently heated in the winter, so cold weather cracking in the mud joints is a concern.

Metal sheeting is attractive since it's light weight and "pre-finished". A little more PITA cutting for outlet boxes and getting a good fit and finish due to the "corrugated" cross section of the metal panel.

In the end it's your call. There are a lot of examples of each in the search tools. Good Luck. Let us know what you choose and how it turns out.

I don't see how you can beat a suspended ceiling system. Lots of choices for the panels including light fixtures. If I wasn't going to have an pen ceiling, it would be suspended. Very light weight and easy to install more insulation.

Disadvantage: overhead storage.

I went with a metal ceiling in my pole puilding. Drywall was 1 1/2 times the cost because I will not hang and finish drywall plus in a PB it will crack easily up here in MI with all the movement they can see.

Hmm. We were just talking about this today since I need to decide on what to do with mine as well. I like the look of that metal ceiling! Certainly a ton less hassle than drywall.

I used foil faced foamboard on my ceiling. With the shiny foil surface, it reflects both light and heat, and if you use the 1" thick one, it adds another R6.5 to your ceiling which is a good thing too.
And, it is very lightweight so installation is a breeze compared to sheetrock, metal, or OSB.
Be careful of using metal if you have large temperature changes because it can easily cause "rain" in your garage with temp differences between outside and inside.

Keep in mind, it will make it darker in your garage as it will not reflect any light.

I'm using vinyl soffit material for the ceiling and all walls higher than 10' high. It is extremely easy to work with and hang, even by yourself. It was a great choice for me. Some of it has been up for 4 or 5 years now and still looks perfect, even after an occasion I bump with lumber and such. You can also pull it off quickly if you need to get into the wall/ceiling for additional piping/wiring later on - that has come in handy more than once so far.

So how'd the beadboard ceilings turn out? I have a finished all white garage but with an ugly cracked ceiling. To avoid my dry wall ceiling cracking again my contractor tells me white pre-primed beadboard placed over the drywall and screwed tight into the overhead soffit is the way to go. I worry about a level and straight look and code.

I just finished my garage. I had 15 yr old drywall that was not taped. I was going to get prefinished beadboard paneling from lowes, I bought a couple of pieces and changed my mind before I started. I ended up finishing the drywall (I did that myself, I am a professional) primed it with kilz and painted it white. I am much happier with it than if I had done anything else. It was also the least expensive route. You can do a vinyl soffit which would be easy to install but will get pricey.

Thanks for the reply. My problem is that when we store things above the garage in the attic and then go up there to retrieve them the taped drywall garage ceiling below cracks. I could have it all retaped and sealed but I'd bet the farm it'll just crack again within a year. Thus the beadboard.

Forget the vinyl soffit. In a few years it will be filthy. Just look underneath a porch on a house. The plastic will attract the dirt and then you're screwed when you want to clean it.

To cover your ceiling you will need 14 sheets of 12' drywall or 21 sheets of 4x8 OSB unless you can find longer sheets. It is also advisable to use lightweight drywall which is a little more costly. Metal will most likely be you most expensive alternative but you will be done with it when it is put up. The other two will need to be primed and painted. And if you go with drywall, you need the seams finished off which is really not the simplest of projects.

I used white plastic corrugated roofing for mine. Got it at Lowe's, if I recall correctly. I had sheet rock, which got wet and fell, twice. No more sheet rock for me. The garage has a flat roof, so it's going to leak again, just a matter of time. The plastic won't fall. There's a slight slope to it, about 8" drop in 20'. The far end is finished with a gutter and drain hose to the floor.

So I had a 1/4 inch bead board ceiling put in over my cracked drywall garage ceiling. Here's the biggest thing I learned. Anything, even two very thin wires going out to your ceiling mounted garage door opener will cause a slightly noticeable wave in the bead board. Now with that said who cares? Not me. It still looks great, is barely noticeable and dang guys, it's just a garage ceiling. (Hope that last bit doesn't get me banned for life.

OSB is NOT fire proof....

Well drywall isn't fire proof either. Itself won't burn, but after a few minutes of fire the stuff is coming down and exposing the wood to the fire. It is just a barrier to slow a fire for you to get out of a house. It won't save anything.

Sheet rock finishing would have been a nightmare in my 20 year old established garage. Not to mention the extra weight. Installation on my 30x30 ceiling was a little costly, but I think well worth it. Was thinking about vinyl, but it always attracts dust and dirt like a magnet, let alone grinding dust and such. But if a section got damaged, it wouldn't be too easy to replace it. Also have unit heater near the ceiling, another reason I avoided vinyl. Had it for a few months now, and I'm very happy with it.

That looks great! I wanted to go with aluminum soffit, but I couldn't find it anywhere locally and it would've cost a small fortune to order it.

not a big fan of vinyl or plastic one engine fire and the shop is cooked even osb scares me a little ......

Thinking of vinyl soffit but wondering if vinyl siding would work. Its cheaper than soffit. Anyone use siding?

My Shedamahol under construction. Its about 550sq ft total with a separate garage for my tractor. I did the 2" foam panels in the ceiling to control the Arizona radiating heat and finished it off with Beadboard. it will be painted a grey white to compliment the block walls.
