Garage Ceiling Joist

Hey guys,

Not sure who the previous owner was or thinking but I can say his workmanship was not up there. I just took down a 4x4 that was held up by two screws with bent angle iron for the garage door opener. In fact when taking it apart only one screw was holding up the garage door....great!

The garage is a 25x25 and currently has 5 factory 2x6 ceiling joist. It appears someone added two 2x6 ceiling joist with gang nails. They are starting to sag and are twisted. Can I take these down and be safe? In the future I am going to run 2x4 across the ceiling and insulate it. I am not using it for storage room.

My first question is why you think they are sagging. They do look poorly made and not fitting for their 25 foot span. Before you remove anything I would brace the other trusses and look for any signs of stress or failure in the existing trusses, then design a solid system for your 2X4'S

I am guessing they are sagging due to somebody trying to hit the cheap gang nail up in the air. The other joist are solid and supported, except for the gang nail ones. I am not sure why he didn't support the 25 span with some kind of bracing holding it from the top. Instead he just ran it the 25 feet, gang nailed and called it a day. Guessing after two of them he called it quits.
