Did a search first but did not come up with any solid finds so here goes...

Looking for alternative materials to be used to cover the ceiling of my 40'x48' pole barn style shop.
I am aware of the usual materials; steel, drywall, AG tuff but was wondering if any other materials have been used by forum members with success.
Thanks for your feedback.

I used fiberglass faced rigid foam insulation. 2" thick, bought used, from a warehouse tearout. Installed with 3" drywall screws and cut up strips of luann to make large washers. much lighter than drywall, easy to install by myself, and R11 insulation. was told it is paintable but I just left it black.

I have a 30x50 shop that I plan on using fiberglass roof material salvaged from box trucks with translucent roof. I work in a truck collision shop, and we replace for minor damage. the size is 8'x20' on average. Best of all it is free.

T&G flooring. I used bamboo flooring from HD. Goes up easy, finished on all sides, and (because it's bamboo) very dimensionally stable.

More information here.

Thanks for the ideas.
I like the fibreglass panel idea, but I can see that is right place, right time kind of stuff.

I used acoustic ceiling tiles and stapled them right to the strapping instead of the drop ceiling metal that they are usually in. Downfall is they are fairly expensive but I got them for $1 a 2x4 tile of kijiji which is like crags list. But if you can find a demo company in your area they might have some used ones for cheep. I like them because easy to put up by yourself and they cut down on the echo in the garage big time.

I used steel for mine, but I strongly considered some sort of thick plastic sheeting like 20mil plastic that I could tack up there with nails with washers on them. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Grip-Rit...nd-Cap-Roofing-Nail-3-000-Pack-GCB1/100111688 and some crawlspace sheeting http://www.globalplasticsheeting.com/crawlspace-1800-global-plastic-sheeting/

I ended up going with steel ceiling installed by the guys that built my building, and I have not regretted it. It was not cheap, but it's great.

Any idea of what the R-value is? What happens in a fire? Will the stuff burn? Give off toxic fumes?

I used Durabuilt White Solid Soffit from Lowe's"
http://www.lowes.com/pd_6809-271-36...ld+white+solid+soffet&facetInfo=#BVRRWidgetID
Each piece is 12" wide by 12' long.

The link tells me the normal price is $3.29 per piece; $0.75 per piece on sale. Did you pay the normal price? Is that correct $3.29/12'x1' piece? Is that right?

That's 27.4 cents per square foot at regular price; 6.25 cents a foot for the sale price!

A couple of years ago I finished the roof in our attached garage with the steel roofing/siding that another poster has posted a picture of. Menards calls it "Pro-Rib". Currently $15.59 for a 36" x 10' piece. That is 52.0 cents a square foot ... which makes the aluminum soffit material at Lowes a better deal than the steel at Menards (if I've done my math right).

Anyone have comments pro/con aluminum soffit material vs the steel siding/roofing?

I used car siding. the look of knotty pine after coating it with clear polyurethane is classic. Also being one by it will support screwing in heavy items.

You can see the deiling in my avatar.

I just did steel in my 17x24 by myself and want to let people know how I did it. I used a Black and Decker Workmate as a drywall lift. I have a low ceiling and was able to use a long broom clamped in the workmate to hold up one end. Then I could raise it and hold it in place hands free while I screwed it up.

I only used 8 and 10 foot panels though. I could have built a cross-T for taller ceiling.

Thought someone could use the workmate idea and wanted to share.

Great idea. Very creative.

We put up 16' sections. Two guys on ladders and my wife trying to help with a push broom. Got it up. Didn't "drop" a piece.

Missed the roof trusses with the screws a few times. Fixed those with a large, white plastic headed pop rivet. Worked good. I'm the only person who can actually the rivet heads!

Once I chose the material, price did not make a difference. Plus, I don't remember the price I paid.
