Just about any garage drywall ceiling I have seen in the midwest has cracks at the drywall tape joints. That includes my garage, which has numerous. I assume it is from the air temperature change in cold or hot weather when opening the door.

My question is, have any of you came up with some alternative ceiling cover ideas other than paint? I know they have a flexible "goof off" spray for drywall and I have heard mixed results. Rather than using this product or patching and potentially having it come back in a year or less I would like to try something different. Perhaps some kind of tiling, paneling or alternative covering over the drywall? Just looking for ideas.

- Thanks

I know a lot of folks on here use metal or PVC corrugated roofing material. I have also scene acoustic ceiling tile, OSB, and plywood. I put sheetrock and cheap paint on my ceiling and fully expect a few cracks. I'm not loosing sleep over it though...

Go to lowes and check out ther metal roofing panels. They come in a few powder coat colors or in a hammertone silver which I used. You can buy self-drilling screws with rubber washers that they sell for these to be used on roofs . The panels come in 8 or 12 foot lengths as I recall. Easy to bolt right into your rafters without drilling and easy to trim

I screwed up OSB and painted it gloss white with the cheapest paint I found at the home despot. Sure I see the edges and screws and the odd chip but it's not the Queen's dining room.

My drywall guy told me a few years back that the reason the drywall cracks and the tape fails is because the ceiling was never painted. Moisture off of vehicles, washing out the floor, etc. let's moisture soak into the drywall compound, then with it freezing then thawing eventually let's things go to hell. My house garage is that way, cracked and tape pulling loose.

With that, MY garage doesn't have any cracks. Although I really don't care for the texture work the guy did, it was painted right after he finished it. I also keep it above freezing in the winter because of paint and such stored in there.

On the house garage, I think, yet not positive yet, but I think I may try to make it look like a box and beam ceiling. Not quite sure whether I just want to use 1x's laid flat and painted, or mount a 2x4 to the rafters and build boxes off of those. I'll have to figure prices.

My drywall guy told me that he could mount some 1x's underneath on the rafters, then put up another sheet of ceiling drywall and either finish it off flat or add texture to it. But it would have to be painted while it is warm to keep any moisture out.
