Garage chair / stool recommendation

I'm looking for a pair of study, decent looking stools to relax in my garage while I'm sitting back reading a magazine. I'd prefer something that has an adjustable height, and has a backrest.

I like the checkered Pitstop ones, but was wondering how study they would be being that they are single poll. My garage is on the small side, and if these were to tip over they would either hit my car (bad) or my car model case (just as bad). Haven't ruled them out, but am looking for more reviews.

I thought I had found what I was looking for as Sears has a Craftsman four-legged stool with pneumatic height adjuster and a backrest. Went there this morning and was ready to bring one to the register when I was reading the packaging. Of course I'm in California so just about everything has the prop 65 warning about lead, and this did to, also noting to wash hands after using. WTF? I'm guessing the only thing that has lead is the vinyl seat and backrest. I mentioned this to my wife and she rolled her eyes, but being a long-time Craftsman owner and seeing what Lambert has done to the company I can totally belief Sears totally cutting corners on this.

Any recommendations? I've done the typical searches and found surprisingly few valid hits. Even my usual search "whateverIm searching for garagejournal.com" didn't yield much, in fact most hits were for pinterest sites.

I hope you are kidding that this would have kept you from buying this stool ???? If so probably the only thing that you should buy is something made out of medical grade stainless.

Also, not sure how this has anything to do with Sears cutting corners. I bet that same stool is probably available from a hundred different sources with different names on it.

Buy a lead test kit, go back to Sears and swab the seat and run the lead test. Then you will know if the vinyl is safe to sit on.

Good grief, it's a chair.. You should be sitting on it, not putting it in your mouth. Prop 65 is more or less a joke these days, it's on everything.

Hell, eat enough spinach or salmon and you have to worry about lead or mercury...

Lead is only one of hundreds of chemicals listed in Prop 65..

Buy the chair and move on..

It's a freaking chair, just buy the Craftsman one and be done with it. The reason it has a lead warning on it is because California is stupid like that.

If you were in any of the other 49 states, then you wouldn't have that warning. Why refuse to buy it because of that warning? Since when have you ever heard of anybody dying by lead poisoning because they sat on a chair? Is it somehow dangerous because it's in California and has that warning label, but all the exact same chairs that are sold in the other 49 states are safe because they don't have the label?

Zero gravity chair. I have never fallen out of it yet.....the stool on the other hand is a accident waiting to happen. It gets used as a step to often,,,more than once someone has done pirouettes on it.

I have your standard cheapo bar stool (promo piece from an auto parts store I'm sure, it was covered in duct tape long before I got it) for sitting at my bench the little bit I do. If I'm parking my *** anywhere in the garage it's in the beat up old recliner I keep by the furnace. Usually where I sit to stare at whatever fab project is sitting in the middle of the shop.

Unless you sit naked... in your garage... reading magazines... all will be fine.

Then I do have something to worry about........

In all seriousness, yeah, it's just a chair, and I'm not worried about me. I was just taken aback when I saw the warning that specifically said to wash hands after use, which is a little different than the standard Prop 65 warning which I generally ignore. And I've never seen the warning on a chair, which made me wonder if perhaps it was really cheaply made and had elevated levels of whatever. I've got three young boys, and the youngest in particular loves hanging out with me in the garage. Between putting hands in mouth, leaving food around, I just don't want to unnecessarily expose them to anything like that, particularly lead.

Here's one of mine, but I doubt it will pass CA emissions;

I have the Craftsman stool. It's fine, but I'd opt for something else for one reason- the foot rest is square. My right leg doesn't bend far enough to reach the foot rest. Stools with a ring style foot rest don't require you to fold your legs in so far to rest your feet.

I have two Cman stools in the garage. I have sat on them eating while in the garage. I'm still alive. I like them and they are more comfortable than the two other Travellers stools that I have, which I believe have the round ring foot rest like Tommy likes. If he was closer, I'd let him swap seats between the stools.

I'd go back and pick up the Cman stool or wait till it goes on sale for about 20-40 dollars less. I'd pay no attention to that Prop 65 warning.

How much are you willing to spend?

Global Office manufactures the best, most durable, and most adjustable chairs in the business. There are genuine dealers on Ebay who sell their overstock.

I'd check on the Grenada and Malaga. If you visit their site... Prepare to be overwhelmed.

They are technically office chairs, but with all the choices, you can get something that will look right in a garage. Shop Ebay if you're on a budget, though, because these things are expensive.

Is anything sold in California without some kind of frikken warning label on it?

Not much. I work in an office building, and the warning is on the doors as you enter. Like I mentioned earlier, I (and most Californians) tend to just ignore them, but I was just taken aback when I saw the warning to wash my hands after use. That was a new one to me, particularly for something you're going to be touching all the time.

I have two of the Craftsman stools - they work well. Actually, they are now in the house at the kitchen bar because they are the only thing that my wife has seen that works with the wood and granite.

They appear to be lead free and we sit in them to eat, so I think the hazard level is rather low.

>Lead is only one of hundreds of chemicals listed in Prop 65..
I read it, going to have to stop drinking gasoline and sniffing car exhaust I guess. Dammit.

>Aloe Vera, non-decolorized whole leaf extract
Well, how about that.

Grab an old bar stool from your local classified paper or reuse center. Built well, and built to keep you comfy for many beers.

Very NICE!! I will be stealing that idea... although that ring gear looks like it would chew its way around my garage like a Jack Russel terrorist..

the gear is on casters :rocker:

sits a little high for the vertically challenged.

Bringing this back up. I just spotted this on the Sears website and see it's part of their Deal Heist. Craftsman black stool for $49.99.

I have the craftsman. It is quite uncomfortable.. The back rest is at a funny angle. The levellers break one by one. Without the levellers it is completely not level. I am throwing it out and I recommend staying away

Plus the white lettering probably added $250.00 to what would otherwise be a $79.00 stool.:lol_hitti

Actually, since it is a licensed product, and not sold by Snap-On, it was about 79.00. I got it as a gift, and the price is no longer on the Sam's Club website, so not sure about the price. Probably a seasonal item, it was a Christmas gift.

I saw this one and it looks like good quality.

I am tired of the cheap ones that doesn't sit level and spin level. It's nauseating when you even try to turn a little. And the backrest is not imitation that is mounted too low contacting the wrong spot at 90 degrees
