Funny how I keep subscribing to Mark's threads: I've been studiously following the hotrod build on the HAMB (great fab work btw), now I'm enviously following the garage build.

Thanks Chris. The outside will have the look of a Victorian 'gig' house(sort of garage for the Sunday carriage) while the interior will hopefully have a '40's feel to it.

No up dates I'm afraid.Too cold for brick laying, has been for weeks.
So I thought I'd post a couple of pics of some of the equipment that I've gathered for it.Some needs restoring but, most of it just needs a clean up and some paint.

Fly press. No tooling for it yet but will eventually get some louvre dies.

48 inch rollers.

48 inch folder.

Myford ML7 lathe.Apparently, very similar to a South Bend.Just need to learn how to use it!

That lathe's a beaut. My Dad has a Myford (Super 7 I think?) which I've told my 3 brothers and Dad will be mine one day. I even know where I'll put it in my yet to be built garage!

I know next to nothing about lathes.I've been told that Myford were one of the best small lathes available though.I got a lot of extras with it,four paw chuck, vertical milling attachment and other stuff that I've yet to figure out.Just hope I can learn enough to do small items for the car.
If you don't already know about it ,there's a site dedicated to lathes;
www.lathes.co.uk
Great info on spares,restoration etc.
Hope your brothers aren't too mechanically minded or you might have a fight on your hands for your dads lathe!LOL
Was hoping to get back to work on the garage this weekend but,we just got hit with more snow and low temperatures again!I'm getting sick of this ****!

Mark!Stop stealing my snow eh!We barely have 6 inches left on the ground wtf? Most years I've already had to shovel the roof off a couple of times by now.
Some nice heavy duty equipment you have there.
I remember the first time I had to use a lathe,I was intimedated by all the levers and knobs.:shocking:Turns out it's not all that hard to learn.Just take your time and all should go well.I use my old 1952 CVA lathe most every day.
Good luck,I don't hnow your model, but they mostly all use the same principals. If you need some pointers, feel free to pm me and I'll try and help you out even if your hoarding all my snow.:)

Man,the snow had just about cleared then,in the last couple of days,we got hit with another 6 inches.i'm sick of the ****** weather up here!
The lathe I have is a British make. That model was manufactured between,I think,'47 and the mid '70's.Thanks for the offer of help,I should be o.k. though as my mate is pretty experienced with them. It's a matter of finding the time to learn more than anything.
Cheers,
Mark.

Did you get to Stirling Castle when you were here?Great place to visit.
If you get up this way,a beer would be great. If you want to one of our local pubs, might be an idea to bring your 'vest'.A set of brass knuckles would probably be a good idea too!:lol_hitti

Never stoped at the castle......Back in the 70's when I was making the London drive, you were just trying to make it through town as best you could....it used to take 12 hours to drive from Fraserburg down to Northhampton.....5 hours alone just to get to Edinburgh....

As for the pub.....no vest needed....I'll bring Baz and his 'buddies'....if I buy, they'll follow me anywhere.....

Missed this! John, fly into Heathrow and you can pick me up from Watford on the way up north. I'm half Scot myself so may be able to interpret a little!

C'mon Mark, where's the updates? Snow must've melted by now?

Hi fellas!Sorry it's been a while but I've not had time to work on the cottage recently due to work and having builders in to work on the main house. It's been a bad couple of months.Builders are about 3 months behind schedule on a job that should have taken 3 or 4 weeks!
Main problem has been suppliers for doors and windows letting us down. Also found when they started work that the roof of the extension at the side of the house needed replacing. My budget has really taken a hammering!

Also, there's been a slight change of plan. The property developers on the land to the rear of me are getting ready to start building houses so,I need to get my **** in gear and build any extra buildings I need before that happens. The reason being is that I'm allowed to errect structures(within certain guidelines) under 'Permitted Development'.That means I don't need planning approval or Building Regs approval. If I wait until I have new neighbours, they may complain and cause problems. If the buildings are here before they move in,there's nothing they can do.

The extra building will be a garage sited between the existing single garage on the left and my current workshop on the right.
rail31may10.jpg

I'm currently clearing the area so I can dig the foundations for the concrete slab.Due to 'Permitted Development' restrictions, the internal floorspace must not exceed 30 square metres and the height of the pitched roof must not exceed 4 metres in height.Big enough for a decent sized garage though!
Made a great score recently too.A local house builder was moving premises and I managed to get the ground floor of a timber frame house for £200!There's about 40 linear metres of prefabricated wall panels which even includes two garage door openings.Result!
These panels will form the garage walls and will be clad in metal lath and cement rendered to match the main house. The pitched roof will be constructed from the timbers I got from the demolished house that I previously mentioned. The roof covering will be reclaimed Scottish slate that I've had stashed for a few years.
I still plan on converting the old cottage, just means it will take a little longer.
Cheers for now,
Mark.

Haha! You should see it up close,a real mess!
Those are just bushes in the field, soon to be replaced with houses. That's the new railway station, under construction,in the background.Since the pic was taken,it's been completed.Thankfully,we hardly notice any noise from it as they run electric trains.

Mark H - What a challenge you are in the midst of; but will be well worth the effort when it is done! You and your wife will own a piece of 'old world charm' and be the envy of those living in the modern development.

It looks like the latest picture was taken from a hill? Could you post some pictures of the country side with your property in the distance? It looks like you are situated on a hillside with some great views, yes? Hopefully, the developers won't infringe on the views from your 'little patch of paradise'.

Hi and thanks.
Sure is a challenge. If I'd realised how much time and money I'd have to put in to this place,I'm not 100% certain I'd have taken it on.Can't wait to get the place finished and start enjoying it though.
The picture was actually taken by the local Historical Society from a micro light aircraft! To be honest, that's probably the best view of the place. On the other side is a dirty old industrial estate!
Cheers,
Mark.

Hi Mark,

Looking good. I'd think about planting a screen of trees between your plot and the new-builds. Also, with the perm' dev't you can build larger but you just need Building Regs approval re the actual construction. However, as you say, the size you're planning is a good size as it is.

Look forward to following this as it progresses.

I just caught up with this thread. I really like your place, a lot of character in those buildings, and I look forward to seeing your progress. I also noted your ML-7- they are indeed fine lathes, and Myford has upgraded their website considerably- I think you will find good info there. I noticed mention of the Myford Super 7 by another poster, here's a pic of mine: 50's vintage, I've refinished (not reconditioned it, definitely one of the best things in my little shop.

Thats a beautiful place/space you got there. I look forward to what you are going to do with that garage. A project of this undertaking takes a man with great forethought and tenacity...sounds like it has the right man for the job. I admire your initiative in rolling up your sleeves and wanting to get it back in shape

Well, builders still haven't finished!Progress is very slow on the house but,we're getting there.
The form work is up for the new garage base and the ********* has been compacted.Ordering the concrete tomorrow!Following the suppliers advice,it will be a 35 Newton mix with fibre additive. Some of the timber I scored from the demolished house have been cut to form the roof trusses. Also scored a garage door for free! It's the old '40's style, side opening wth glazed panels in the top. It'll need some repairs to the boards but should suit our property better than a modern one.Just waiting for it to arrive.

Hi Baz.A screen of trees is part of the plan......eventually!Need to sort out a new boundary fence first.I'm aware of the situation re building regs, just want to keep that mob out of the pcture, the less they know the better!:lol_hitti

Thruxton, your ML7 looks a lot nicer condition than mine.I need to give it a good tidy up,make a stand for it then learn how to use it!
Thanks for the info on their web site,I'll check it out.

Thanks Red Leader.Don't know about 'forethought and tenacity' or just a case of having bitten off more than I can chew!I'll post some more pics when there's something wort looking at.

Hi Mark - I love this 'Cottage Garage' - so much potential!

When you brick these windows up, are you planning to recess the brickwork, and then have 'false' windows? You could paint them to look like real windows - aka 'Portmeirion',,

I think this would like awesome as you drive up your drive, much nicer than a blank wall...

Mark that's a giant plot, awesome potential. As above get the outside frame up sharpish then you can take your time kitting it out. With that much space I'd go over 30 sq/m. Mine's 16ft * 22ft which I think is 32sq m and it soon gets filled up! I had to get the council round to approve my asbestos roof replacement but generally I think it's just an expensive box ticking excercise.

Hi Felix. That's exactly what plan on doing with the window openings!Recessed brickwork, smooth rendered and painted to simulate sash and case windows. The brickwork will be tied in rather than toothed in so that it'll be easier to reinstate windows in the future.

Thanks morfmedia, yeah it's a great plot.Took me a while to find it.These sort of properties still come up for sale every now and then up here but,you have to be in the right place at the right time. They're usually snapped up by developers.Until we got this place, the best I had to work in was a 16ft ex-council lock-up!I could never afford a place like this if I still lived 'darn sarf'.
Yep,need to get it up soonest as we're expecting snow at the end of October.
A larger building would have been great but, over 30 sq mtr and building control have to be involved.I was initially going to build a much larger building but the costs were getting out of control.Inspection fees, engineers reports etc.Sod that! This garage should be up and watertight for less than 2 grand.

Some progress at last!Slab was laid 4 days ago.:beer:It's not the smoothest slab I've ever seen though it's the first I've ever done.It is level though.

Lovely, lovely place, Mark.

Andy

Thanks Andy, though if you saw it up close..........

Long overdue update!
Once the slab had cured,I bolted the sole plate down with HILTI anchor bolts. Then nailed down the wall panels, reinforcing the joints between them with coach bolts.Went up easer than I thought though I had to alter some panels to fit.

SDC11367.jpg

The window openings in the panels have had some framing fitted and will be filled in for security.
The roof structure is coming along.Trusses are made from reclaimed 6x2 floor joists and fitted at 600mm centres.Still in the process of adding the cross pieces to stiffen them up and stop them spreading.Should be plenty strong once the roof is fully boarded. We recently had 100mph winds up here and the roof's still in tact!

SDC11366.jpg

Did some work on it today.Made up the framework for the front gable end.Hopefully get that fitted tomorrow.
Cheers,
Mark.

I thought this thread had been consigned to the archives. Good to see you posting again. Even if you are stingy with the pictures.

Haha!Ain't getting rid of me that easily!
I've had camera problems recently hence the lack of pics.Started working again after hitting the kitchen wall at a high rate of speed!:bounce:
Only problem now is that I can only take two or three pics at a time.Gets any worse, and I'm taking a hammer to the *******!

Thanks Baz,any progress on your build?
