garage circuits, unclear about..

1) I am running a new 20A that will be routed around the garage (this is not the only circuit in the garage, there were already one 15A that is on the ceiling and for lights)
I want to have one of the receptacle plug in 2 liftmaster 8500, now no where does it say garage door opener needs to be on a dedicated circuit, right?


2) I am running a second circuit also 20A, one outlet inside and one outlet outside. It's basically to be used for a 120V lift motor pump sometimes, but I want an outlet outside the garage since I don't have one. The above picture says your garage outlets cannot be run outside the garage as well?
But that doesn't apply when I am running the 3rd and 4th circuit already, right? Or they really don't want anything that is servicing the garage to go out of the area, kind of like kitchen outlets? I don't see how having an outlet on the inside wall and exterior wall be a big hazard on load.

My understanding is the circuit serving the required outlet(s) cannot also serve outside outlets. That doesn't mean you cannot have an additional circuit supplying more outlets inside that also supply outside outlets.

This is correct, however, there is an exception ( 210.11(C)(4) ) that says readily accessible outlets on the outside of the garage may be on the same circuit as the required garage outlets.
This is a new exception for the 2017 code cycle.

Oh, and the garage door openers do not have to be on a dedicated circuit.

"2017 NEC

“210.11(C) (4) Garage Branch Circuits.

In addition to the number of branch circuits required by other parts of this section, at least one 120-volt. 20-ampere branch circuit shall be installed to supply receptacle outlets in attached garages and in detached garages with electric power. This circuit shall have no other outlets.



Exception: This circuit shall be permitted to supply readily accessible outdoor receptacle outlets.”

Below is the 2017 requirement for garage receptacles outlet placement.

210.52 (G) Basements. Garages, and Accessory Buildings.

For one-and two- family dwellings, at least one receptacle outlet shall be installed in the areas specified in 210.52(G)(1) through (3).


These receptacles shall be in addition to receptacles required for specific equipment



(1) Garages, in each attached garage and in each detached garage with electric power, at least one Receptacle outlet shall be installed in each vehicle bay and not more than 1.7 m (51/2 ft) above the floor."


While I like to see new requirements so garages have more outlets in general, some of this is really annoying. It's hard to put outlets when the doors already take up one of the wall already, and it can't be a ceiling one either. It's silly to require 3 car garage to have 3 outlets. It's not the cars that need outlets it's the workbenches!

When I moved into our current ( vintage 1951) house 35 years ago, the 2 car garage had one duplex receptacle on the wall in the far corner. No automatic opener.
Now it has an automatic opener plugged into the ceiling and 5 receptacles on the walls.

The one just inside the garage door gets lots of use. I recommend putting one there.

Actually, it is the cars that require the outlets. The whole reason for this code requirement is to ensure you have a place to plug in an electric car. Although I do agree it's stupid, since nobody charges an electric car with a 20A 120V circuit except in an emergency where there's no other power source available.

The 2017 code only applies if your jurisdiction is on it. A lot of places seem to be one cycle behind the most current code. Where I live we're still on the 2014 NEC.

thanks guys, I am trying to get as close as possible and I do not use TR outlets either, just won't have them inside the garage.

Why are you worried about code for receptacle placement if you are going to ignore the code that requires TR receptacles?
