OK, I have decided to have a garage built that is free standing (detached) in my side/back yard at end of front driveway/side drive. I want a 16 X 34 and storage in attic area (where I can put a floor to store items of lesser weight). Now what I need to know or find out is an estimate of what it will costs me to have footers, cement floor, electric and garage built. I live in the Mid-West so it gets darn cold (especially today -17), so insulation in side walls and roof will be a must for me. I do not plan on having it heated, but insulated good. I can do some of the work, but am limited on what I can do physically. So, with all of you experts out there having been there done that.......can anyone give me some basic estimates on what this might costs me to complete? I will be actively pursuing this in the spring/summer of 2015. Tks in advance for any helpful info.

Somewhere between 20k and 100k

Need more details to even get remotely close.

Roof, Wall materials? Interior wall coverings?

It's going to be easier to just start calling every single builder in your area and try to get them to come out and talk to you. You'll be lucky to get 1 in 4 to come give you a quote and info. Start there to give you a base line. Cheapest way will be to act as your own GC and start getting individual bids from contractors for all the work.

FWIW, I had a 30 X 40 pole barn erected, after I did the site prep, contracted the concrete work, traded for the electric and did all the finish/insulation myself and still have about $24K into it.

I know when I was looking concreate was the big one. The other one was to have trusses for a storage area were about 3x higher than standard

Impossible to give you a quote. As a guess, as said, $20K to $100k. Go to a lumber yard or better yet call a contractor and sit down with them and draw up what you want and go from there. Good luck and post pictures!

I just finished a 30x35x11 stick build with 9x16 & 9x9 doors all insulated and 5/8 sanded plywood on the lid and the walls for about $35-$40 per sf. I was the general contractor and I got some great deals from people I know in the trades. I also used Crane Board insulated vinyl siding and that was very costly at 5K just for the materials. It is a very sweet build I have to say.

Now is the time to talk to some of the companies specializing in building garages in your area. I had a Coach House garage built last spring, 32 by 48 with R 13 overhead doors. I did the electrical, subbed the insulation, and did the interior paneling myself. Cost was probably around $40/sf
