Garage Decor

So I've got a pretty nice garage. Black Cabinets, white walls, a few red accents. I'm planning on putting up some fabric curtains to hide a shelving area, but I'm having a hard time deciding on a neat/cool/awesome fabric to use. My thoughts are something in a grey/black/whitish. I'm kinda thinking urban digital camo. I've thought about some sort of "manly" grey pattern, but I cant seem to find a pattern that's good for a shop. not sure what I'm trying to get across here, maybe a black on black with deer skulls, urban camo, some contemporary grey on grey pattern, a muttled grey pattern. I don't want colors other than white grey and/or black (or if absolutely necessary maybe some red). I also don't want to draw a lot of attention to it. Any thoughts? Also, does anyone have any good pointers to a "garage décor" thread or discussion area?

Do you do any work in this garage? I understand that some guys have a garage for car/boat/bike/toy storage and a separate shop for working. If so, I get the curtains. If you actually work in this garage, I can't imagine curtains.

But on a serious side -- barn door type sliding panels (perhaps poly carbonate) might be best as any type of fabric in a garage setting will get filthy and could be a fire hazard.

Here's the shed. 30x52. two lifts. plumbed with air, communications etc. two bathrooms and an upstairs. You can see the "floating" shelf near the ceiling going along the back wall. I want to cover up the **** I have stored there. My motto for building this garage has been "super slick and clean". One of my goals is to not be able to see any "stuff" like the junk stored on the shelf. I basically just want to hang a 2' strip of fabric from the ceiling in front of it. Just want to find something that fits. I also plan to put up some galvanized corrugated metal in there two. I don't want rigid panels as they will get in the way of putting stuff up and down.

Martha Stewart always recommends to start with the artisanal pieces. At Pier 1 or Crate and Barrel you should be able find some artisanal wall hangings which will enhance the fabric curtains and the accents. Bed bath and beyond might have some after Christmas sales you can browse through. Use bold colors with a delicate balanced look to carry out your theme.

Maybe a scented candle arrangement in front of some wicker sconces would look nice. Don't overlook wallpaper which can provide a nice foundation so the curtains don't overwhelm the space. There's also beaded curtains to consider, which would be a wild expression of manliness. a mirror over your leather sectional will add function.

Regardless, be sure to install automatic liquid aroma diffusers in various locations within the cave. "Isle Royal Sugar maple & hazelnut" and "Sweet Honeysuckle" are winning fragrances sure to please visitors.

You have a nice looking shop and I can understand your desire to cover the shelf contents. However, you have a challenge on at least the gable end. Were you planning to suspend a curtain rod to hang the cloth from? I believe poly tarps can be found in silver or black as well as the blue. I would be tempted to cut strips of poly tarp and attach to the ceiling with furring strips and plan on pulling the tarp back and up when accessing stuff. I would not want to use conventional fabric for fear of dust impregnation and fire hazard.

If you want to get real fancy, a collection of old signs or framed posters hung from shower door track ( on rollers so they can be slid past each other) would be awesome.

A friends dad did exactly what you are talking about and it was a nice, clean look. He used a white canvas and after seeing it, I nearly went that way as well. In the end I put up doors that hinge toward the ceiling and put a one foot piece of 1x2 in place to hold it open when I need to. I just lift the door, turn the stop and the door stays up by the ceiling.

I had a similar problem with the loft above the work area in my shop. Our house has a finished basement so no storage in the house. The loft in my barn is the only area to store non man cave household stuff. I am into Pontiac GTO's and my wife found some GTO material and made curtians to keep as much dirt as possible off all of our stuff we store up there. I have had numerous "Man Card" card holding guys in my barn and never have I had a silly comment on my curtians. In my barn we work all the time and have done full frame off restorations on cars to small pine wood derby cars and everything in between so I think my barn qualifies as a working shop.
I also did not want any interference from doors, hinges or other hardware so this is what I did. I just strung a coated wire rope across the opening and hung the GTO curtians. The hook on the end is open so I can take them down easily to clean them.

Agree. Something hanging from a track in front of the shelf that can be slid back. Of course you need 2 tracks or a dual track. After the hardware is purchased, there's no limit of materials that can be used.

You mentioned corrugated metal. Well, there ya go.

I vote for hard curtains: white tile board cut to width and hung from the ceiling on shower door track and bearings. I would NOT hang galvanized metal from the ceiling. Can you say guillotine? But then again, if you add bloodshed, it automatically becomes a Man's garage. Check out the "Asylum" thread, he seems to be the master of storage.

There was a thread on here recently where someone was looking for a "piston" type of door that swung up towards the ceiling. Basically you pushed on the door from the bottom and it "unlocked" then the hydraulics slowly lifted the door and it was flush with the ceiling. This would surely be sticking to your "slick" appearance and also allow you to keep your "man card" that everyone is trying to pull from you here. I figure there is a probably quite a price to it ( I don't have anything like this in my garage) and if it's too expensive the GTO cover (or whatever your into) on the wire would seem to be a cost effective route that doesn't look bad.

I would just head to your local Joann Fabrics or Hancock Fabrics store (or whatever is in your area). They all seem to have the same sets of "novelty fabrics" (ie - skulls, camos, cars, flames, etc.) see if one of them grabs your attention.

First off, that is a killer shop. It is awesome. I noticed you liked hunting from the pictures. I think it would look good to have a curtain covering that upper storage area. If you could somehow get a custom design printed for you. You could use vinyl and get a custom print. It would allow you to roll them up to the ceiling to get them out of the way.
Something like these pictures would look good. For myself, I would pick a nature type scene, or a tool one. Here's some samples:
