Joyo, I have one in my shop for exactly the same thing you want it for. My shop is 24 x 48 and I keep mine going all the time. It works on demand. It has been on my work bench for 8 years and still going strong. I have seen a dramatic difference in the rust department for everything in the shop. I am in Corpus and my humidity problem is way worse than what you have in Austin. My unit was only a couple hundred bucks when I bought it. It has a hose that runs into my flower bed out behind the shop so don't need to drain it. I clean the filter every few months when I get home.

I run one in the garage and let it drain outside into the lawn so I don't have to empty the reservoir every day. In the winter I shut it down and bring it in the basement, running the wood stove keeps it pretty dry in the garage then anyways.

I have a small unit that was running 24-7 for a few weeks trying to dry out the building bought for £30 off ebay.. After two weeks I noticed it was pulling less and less from the air as the Bunker dried out.. after three weeks it's pulling almost nothing so I put it on a timer plug so it only runs in the small hours. (cheaper electricity)

A dehumidifier should lower the temp of the garage. By taking the humidity out there is nothing to carry the heat. A humidifier will raise the temperature and that is what you want in the winter and a dehumidfier in the summer.

Both dehumidifiers and humidifiers raise the temperature of their surroundings. They use energy, and that energy enters the environment as heat.

Dehumidifiers make a room feel cooler than it is, because dry air allows for more evaporation to occur. This is the mechanism behind sweating -- the phase change from liquid water to gas water cools down your skin.

Dehumidifers also help control rust, because they lower the dew point of the air, which leads to less condensation and thus less rust.

I use a dehumidifier Woods DS28F with heat pump at 46 kvm, works very nicely. Want to put my dehumidifier on the wall along with the heat pump, must also lay the drain hose for condensed water out to avoid having to empty the tank twice a week ...

I run a dehumidifier in my 2 car garage year round. (Atlanta, GA area)

Even when I open the door for the afternoon, it will dry out the air after I close the door. The only problem I have it the garage is noticeably hotter than the house is. The dehumidifier raises the temp of the 2 car garage.

Just buy a $100 dehumidifier, pipe the drain water to the outside and see how it works (not much money to try it). After you are up and running, adjust the humidity knob to make the unit only run when it is humid.

Same situation here. Works great in my two car thats used daily. Dries a vehicle off thats been driven in the rains also.

It might be a zombie post, but the topic is still relevant--especially with summer approaching. I have had a dehumidifier in my 2 car garage shop here in North Florida for about five years. It has a long drain hose and has been trouble free. There are lots of cast iron tools in my shop and the dehumidifier certainly helps. It turned rusting tools from an alarming heavy rust condition to just a light rust bother.

I use a Danby dehumidifier that I purchased at COSTCO and rated by CR as very efficient. Even if summer when I open the garage door to bring car in or out, the humidity level is back to normal in 10-15 minutes. So well worth it. Agreed temp goes up slightly but is compensated for by lower humidity so fee;s better. No rust on anything.
