Ok gents - I have a two car garage that's about 22' x 22' with a ceiling that is probably 12' or so and I'm finally getting jumping in to make the place awesome. While I'm I ok in the execution of tasks such as building shelves, painting, etc., I'm somewhat clueless when coming up with a design plan. I've been drooling over all of the garages and writing down the cool things I've seen, I still don't have a sense on how to keep a good looking style in the execution. I don't want to end up with the garage equivalent of the Homer Simpson designed car.

The house was built about 10 years ago. Garage is sheet-rocked and mudded. On two of the walls, there are cement foots that go up about 3.5 feet and one wall the footing is only sticking up about 10 inches. There are wooden stairs that lead from the house to the garage. No other doors and windows except the garage door. (yes, pictures will help of course and I'll post some later) I epoxied the floor in grey epoxy a couple of years ago and it still looks good.

Now here is where you come in. I'm toying with the idea of painting the footings (color of course depends on the design we finalize) and then making a wainscoting in bare corrugated galvanized roofing to about 5 feet. This is for style as well as protection as I like to hose out the garage from time to time. Then I think I would then figure out a cool way to trim the top of that off. Finally - I would be painting from that point up to and including the ceiling. Ultimately I think I want to do an 'old meets new and high tech' theme.

What I need to figure out:

  • Color to paint concrete footings
  • A good looking/stylish way to trim the top of the steel
  • Color to paint the walls (probably prefer lighter shades to help with lighting)
  • Color to paint the ceiling
  • Color to paint the hanging wood wall cabinets that I'm going to build for storage to hide the clutter
  • Accent lighting ideas (main lighting already figured out)

I'm planning on putting in 4 T5HO fixtures for lighting on multiple switches to control brightness. I've already purchased a rapid air system for routing my compressor stuff that is light blue that has been gathering dust for a couple of years waiting for install. I just purchased 2 56" HF roller cabinets, black HF roller tool cart, HF 1000 lb motorcycle lift as 'furniture' for the shop.

my garage is the same way.
Im still in the process and waiting to Sheetrock. I have the 3ft. concrete walls.
I built a stairway off the home access platform from the garage. This will provide extra storage, as my garage is 12-13' high and i can stand in the attic.
Maybee something to consider doing if you can?

I plan to do gray epoxy, with white flake. Including the concrete 3' walls. Then paint a red border above the concrete. Transition to the floor color grey. With the ceiling being white.
White is good but not for working. So thats why im doing just the ceiling white... So figure out a color combo that works for you. There are tons in the garage gallery section.

I oddly like the idea of the galvanized roofing being used as wainscoting. I think you would need to keep the height the same on all the walls, otherwise it may be a bit odd.

To trim the top of the galv roofing, I would say 2x4 or 2x6 shoulder and in the area where the footing only goes up 10" you may be could make the shoulder removable for putting thin narrow stuff behind the roofing.

I have no input in terms of color as my garage is two different colors at the moment.
