I'm guessing sub-par quality or improper assembly/installation. 4-posters don't need to be bolted down.

(Or, more likely...someone pulling in to the next space over/under hit the leg and took it out).

Several of those pics with cars falling off lifts, look like quake damage.

When the next big one hits the SF bay area, there will be a lot of these pictures.

There weren't nearly as many lifts in residential garages, back in 1989.
