Putting the beams in this was a difficult task. Since I knew the weight may be an issue we stripped all the old asphalt shingles off. We then used ice and water shield and did the whole roof over. I put strapping every 6 feet or so and I put cleats on the bottom.

I use my tractor to lift the beams up, which were 400 pounds each

We rested the beams on the cleats and then used a pulley system to decrease the weight by a 2/3

We then dropped them in from the top

At this point, things are a little rickety because the trusses were so cut apart. Once we got the beams sitting on the post we started Sister all the Joyce with 2 x 12.

We did this a few years ago

But working in the garage was unbearable 90% of the time

It was either too hot or too cold

So then I added 36,000 BTU heater and AC mini splits

Then we insulated the whole thing with spray and insulation. The next step is sheet rock.

It is getting painted now. I am going to spray the ceiling and walls. They will be white on the ceiling and 1/2 the walls. I will then do a border maybe black and white checkers and blue on the bottom. I am moving the middle lift. It is too big and makes the garage too small. Also my wife doesn't like parking under it. We are going to paint the doors in my house. The house is 115 years old and I have 20 doors to paint. We will paint them in the garage and then I will finish it and consider a floor. Expoxy is out b/c the floor gets damp on occasion

We sistered all the rafters and added the ridge beam. It was done by an engineer. The garage was just awful before. The low ceiling made you feel closed in and the popcorn spray on the walls and ceiling were awful. We decided to rip i all down and do the spray insulation

Agreed the low ceiling was claustrophobic but I initially thought the same as Codyboy - why don't the walls want to tilt outward? I'm not an engineer but I did spend my career in heavy cvil construction. Glad you did hire an engineer but I don't see how a ridge beam; regardless of it's size, functions in any way to act as a "3rd side" so to speak to keep the walls from tilting outward due to the weight of the roof framing and roofing materials. I suppose sistering the rafters is helpful since they are attached to the top plates of the walls but I suppose the engineer calc'ed it.

You did almost the exact same thing to your ceiling as I did to mine. Best thing I did for functionality of my lift and yes it takes the claustrophobia out for sure. You will not regret it! I'll be finishing my walls in the next few months.

Thanks Fire bird parts. It did require a bit of figuring. The best part is the pulley system. Since I had the strapp9ng on the roof the beam rode on a few pieces of wood and was easily pulled up to the top with the pullies!

Ac-WC you did a nice job very similar to mine. Did you drop your beam in from the top?

No, the vent/window was removed and enlarged then each of the 3 laminates was slid in through the hole. The crew of 4 Amish had it done before I could get out to watch them do it. All they had was ladders.

I don't know if there are termites where you are or not, but just in case there are I will post this photo. Two years earlier the spray foam was applied to solid wood without termites...

This was on the Texas Gulf Coast. Definitely termite country. Once they get under the spray foam is hard to tell they are there.
