Garage Door Buying Question

I'm looking to get a new garage door. I currently have a one piece that my garage door opener is having trouble opening and closing smoothly.

When I looked at Home Depot and Lowes online, their offerings for doors don't specify one piece or multi piece. By multi piece I mean the kind of door that is broken into pieces and "snakes" it's way up and down.

Are all garage doors sold today "multi piece?" I don't want to get another single piece garage door.

Cato: i just bought two single garage doors that are both insulated and they are a million % better than the 50 year old wood doors they replaced. i didn't see any one piece garage doors in all my searching, but they could still make them. i would definitely do the insulation upgrade because since i have had mine one the temperature in the garage hasn't dropped below 50 and we had a couple weeks in the low 20's last month.

the new side mounted garage door openers are awesome if you have the funds and the layout for one.

"sectional" garage door is what you are looking for. Are all garage doors sod today "mulitt piece"? I have no idea, but all I can say is that in my neighborhood they are all sectional doors. You do have other options other than Home Depot and Lowes.

Do yourself a favor and don't buy anyone's bargain basement door! Get an insulated door with torsion springs..Not Extension Springs!! Much quieter, smoother, warmer and cooler. Less wear and tear on your opener. You can also use a side mount opener.

If HD or Lowes won't hook you up find a Door Co that will. FYI box stores don't install them, just sell them then sub out the installs. Warranty can sometimes be a pain. Good Luck.

I'm in Southern California so I don't need an insulated door - it rarely gets below 40 degrees here.

I'm assuming that all doors sold today (like at HD and Lowes) are multi piece.

Thanks for your input.

There are other advantages to an "insulated" door as well if you go with one that is a sandwich panel type construction. They are quieter and structurally stronger as well without the need for extra bracing.

If you are looking for a basic pan type door, most of them are pretty similar within the same gauge, and then it comes down to install/cost/colors/other features.

If it is a raised panel type steel door, it is sectional. I know places that will take panels and make replacement one piece doors out of them, but it isn't very common.

Try Overhead door company or clopay. They have doors of every kind and range. They will price door and installation and make it easy.

Salesman will come out and pick from a multitude of styles and options and youre done.
