Garage Door Drywall "Gap" Help

I've been working on my garage conversion for awhile now. I caved on the drywall portion and paid someone to do it. The walls were apparently super not straight and to get the drywall to lay flat the contractor had to shim out from the garage door quite a bit.

there is about a 1/2 inch gap between the end of the drywall metal channel, and the header over the door itself.

I'm a little at a loss on what to do about it (how to cover it up) and was wondering if anyone had any good ideas.

This would be for the full perimeter of the 2 car garage door (7ft, 7ft, 16ft)

The ideas I had so far...

* New PVC Jamb - I could install a new jamb surrounding the whole thing, but that means a new brick mould on the outside and I need some custom jamb depths and cuts since it apparently "curves". I'd really like to not do this.
* T Channel? - In my mind, there would be some PVC strip I could hammer into the gap covering the hole 1" or so ... but I cannot find a product like this anywhere
* Flat strip? Even a really think Vinyl strip about an 1-2" that I could glue or staple down would probably be fine? But I'm not sure where to get or buy this either (if it exists not sure what it's called).

Looking for help that is cheap but decent looking. Once the new door is installed, I obviously won't see this when it's closed ... I'm just worried with it exposed it could be an entry point for pests.

(the old door is temporary on the outside of the garage to allow the drywall installation. So ignore the 2x4 braces holding the door in place.)

Make sure you cut back that cardboard-y stuff, flush with the metal strip, then caulk and paint. Use something like Big Stretch to fill it up. It sticks to anything and allows a lot of movement.

Alright. I'll give that a try. Originally I thought the 1/2" gap was too pig to caulk (especially upside down), but it's worth a shot.

Check the maximum gap allowed by the caulk manufacturer. That may be too big a gap to fill. You might be better with a think board or metal sheet to cover the gap then cover the thin board or sheet with drywall mud, sand then paint. Downside of this is that every time you hit the edge it is going to crack off and that will be an ongoing maintenance task. I prefer a wood jamb around the whole edge.

Another option is to remove and replace the 1x trim piece with another 1x that is wider to span the full width like you stated and it would look better than a fill job.

The picture is kind of confusing. From what I gather is that the garage door is sitting outside of the garage?
I would clean it up and seal it with minimal expansion spray foam, cut it back when it dries then cover it with a new weather strip. You can caulk the weather strip molding to the door frame to insure a good seal against moisture.
Personally, I would have taken the board down and replaced it with a wider one then butted the drywall against it. It would have had a more finished look and been better protected from damage.

Thanks folks. I tried the big stretch approach. it was not quite as clean as I hoped for, but not too bad either.

Garage door replacement is coming tomorrow so I wanted to have that in-place prior to install.
