Garage door extension question

Hi all, I bought a new/old house built in 1957 with a 1 car garage door. The front wall is 20 ft (19.10 to be exact) and I would love to convert it to a 2 car door so that I can fit a boat inside (currently I am short 5 inches). From my understanding this used to be a carport and about 15 years ago they decided to enclose it. Any idea if this can be done and approximately what it will cost. Thank you.

so you want to widen the door?
yes it can be done, but you will have to have a sized header to take the load of the roof. and it won't be an easy /cheap reno working with the cement block.
no idea of cost, i guess an easy 10g tho , IMO

I figured since it was a carport before and something was supporting the roof maybe it will be just a removal of the added blocks 4 ft to the left and 3 ft to the right to create a 14 ft opening ?

The big question is if you have block over the door.
I am guessing not.
You will have a wood header to support the roof across the door opening.
Like you say, if you are lucky you will a corner to corner header.

The wood on the inside of your wall is just there to mount the door to..
You should be able to remove the door and its mounting framework.

This is when you can do your best structural inspection.
If your header isn't from corner to corner then you will need to install a temp wall to support the roof.
Next is remove the existing wood over the opening followed by the block in the way.
Clean up the raw edge of the exposed block and insert a longer header.
Then you can remove the temp wall, install new door support framework, install new door, install trim, and paint.

It is also possible there was a post in the middle of the car port holding the roof up. That went away with the block wall. You should seek a pro to make sure this doesn't crash down while you install the proper header. Good luck

Yes, you will be able to widen your garage door. I'd recommend getting help from a professional who can tell you the cost involved in this project. It's not a cheap project to increase the size of your garage door. Therefore, I'd suggest putting a lot of thought into this project before making a decision. I found an article online that helps explain how to measure your garage and ensure that it meets your needs - https://housetipster.com/housetips/9128/essential-measurements-for-the-perfect-garage
This guide might help you with some questions you have about expanding your garage and make it easier for you to understand how to accurately find the dimensions for your garage.
