Garage Door Flashing

Hey Gents,

I thought I'd made a thread about this in the past, but I can't find it. I'll try and add photos tomorrow, weather-pending.

My Garage Doors have no flashing above them. By appearances, it's always been this way. The damage isn't terrible (it's on a side that only gets hit by water if we've a strong western wind, which is really rare here), but it's something I'm tracking. I had a handyman over to bid some other work, and he said the only way to repair it would be the whole side of the garage.

The door trim is damaged, and pulling away a little, but the siding itself all looks to be fine. I thought they'd be able to just replace the trim, and pop the siding above the doors loose, slide the flashing in, and then re-attach it and install new trim. He said that wasn't really possible.

Anyone have experience with a situation like this? (and yes, I know photos are worth 100k words, in this instance, so I'll add them as soon as the weather permits). Do I need to just budget for replacing all of the siding?

What kind of siding do you have? Vinyl, Hardie Plank, ?

Most siding can be repaired, ie sections removed from the field then woven back in. Thus I think your concept of local siding removal, trim replacement, proper flashing installed, followed by siding reinstallation (ie - local repair) should work fine.

Vinyl has a lock bead that a tool is used to snap it loose and reinstall it. Cement board siding repairs may require small face nails.

Without pictures, it sounds like your handyman is fishing for a retirement job vs a couple of hours.

I'll add photos in a little bit, but my siding is wood. I forget what the name of it is. It's basically just treated plywood.
