Hello All, I am designing my garage and I am having trouble with what my garage door height should be.

My sprinter van (high ceiling edition) has a height of 113.5 inches. That includes the AC unit.

If I get a 10 foot tall garage door, would my sprinter van be able to drive into that?

Or should I get an 11 foot tall door to be safe.

I ask because on every garage door I look at the opening might be 8 feet or 9 feet or 10 feet but it always seems that the door itself when open hangs below the door opening by 3-5 inches. I’m concerned about this.

Thank you in advance for your help.

14 foot will fit anything. I still cuss my 12 foot door and will be raising it at some point.

If I had to choose from only 10 or 11, I'd pay for the 11, but if you ever upgrade to a little motor home or switch to a truck camper you'll be cussing your door like I do.

The door should open completely to allow full access to the entire finish frame size of the opening. So 10', or 120" is enough. But if you can do 11', I'd do that. I've never heard anyone complaining that their garage door is too big.

FYI, With most door companies you don't have to stick to even foot increments. Most offer sections that are 18" 21" or 24" and you can combine them into whatever height you need.

A couple months ago I installed a CHI 90" door (5-18" sections to make a 7-1/2' height) with a low headroom track in a 101" ceiling building. Better than a 7' and I could fit a 8'

Talk to your local door installer, especially if he is to be the one to install said door.

My last garage, everyone said I couldnt get a 9” door with a 9’6” ceiling height. With him and I brainstorming some ideas. I sunk the lights into the ceiling and went Liftmaster 8500….

needless to say we were able to tuck that big door as close to the ceiling as we could.

There's special high-clearance tracks to get the door closer to the ceiling, when open.

I did a 14' tall door so I could pull in anything of road-legal height.

My Sprinter / Revel is in the same situation. The garage at the house has a 10’ door in one of the bays that it might fit under, or maybe not, and there’s another 10’door at the back of the shop.

I’ve been too lazy to/ busy to see if it will squeak under either of them, ( I’d have to do a bunch of shuffling around to be sure) so I’ve been keeping it in the main shop with the 14’ doors.

If it clears the 10’ door openings, it won’t be by much.

10 is a standard height for a door, as is 12'. I would believe that 11' is going to be more of a special order than just ordering a door.

I wouldn't be surprised if a 12' is the same cost as an 11. Ask your local supplier for price comparison.

If you say so….. subtract what a ceiling fixture hangs down from the ceiling (slim LED ones just came out after I built this garage) and what a R16 door is for thickness to stick out above the roller brackets….

That is not a 9' door with a 9'6" ceiling height. You might have 6" from the top of the tracks to the ceiling, but not from the top of the door.
