Garage Door - How much insulation

I'll be moving into a new place soon and the garage is not insulated. I'll be insulating the walls with R13 while adding power, windows, etc. I figured I'd be wise to replace the door with an insulated one. I live in the southeast and I'm just not sure how important insulation is. I've been looking the the Clopay doors at Home Depot and they vary quite a bit. I want to condition the space with a mini-split later. Is it worth the extra cost to go from something around R6 to something with R13 or even R18?

I'm in NE Ohio and I went with the R-18 Clopay but I'm in a colder area. And.... I priced Coplay at Home Depot and went down the street to a local garage door installer since they sold Clopay doors to get their price. Wow.....big difference in price. The private company said, " from where do you think Home Depot gets their doors? From us....they are the middle man". So.....call n check around. You will be able to afford the R-18. They are ice doors. Good luck.

p,
I would probably be more concerned with how airtight the door will be when closed. I replaced my original leaky wood door with a middle of the road insulated steel door a few years back and the fact that it is pretty much sealed up tight when closed made all the difference in the world. I am sure the insulation helps but it is only the thickness of the door, probably R-6 or so ? I can heat my 22x23 attached garage with a 5000W electric heater no matter how cold it gets here in Maryland.

You only buy insulation one. You pay for heat every year. Spend the extra money on insulation. No one ever says"gosh I put too much insulation in my walls! "

Funny i was just reading about this the other day.... Did you know that a r12 door is only about 5% more efficient than a r6? Wierd isnt it? Reason being... Imagine a big gaping hole with the wind blowing through; that would be the equivalent r0. Now put an r6 door in there. Voila! You have stopped 90% or more of your heat loss. Now put the insulation twice as thick so your at r12. How much more effective is it? Answer, roughly 5%.

Cant remember the website.... It was a garage door website i found on google while searching "garage door efficiency".

That being said, i just ordered r13 polyurethane doors tonight for the shop i am working on.

Really? That's good to hear. How much did you save? Home Depot is currently having a 15% off sale. I'll definitely have to shop around.

You could also look at it from a different angle. R12 would be stopping 100% more air than R6
