Garage door insulation cover

I'm in the process of insulating an un-insulated wood door. The door panels are recessed 1/2" on the inside and it's a perfect fit for 1/2" polyisocyanurate foam. So I'm left with an overall smooth surface, but the insulation panels are exposed and I'd like a more uniform surface for aesthetics.

I could solve this with hardboard, but then there's an 1/8 ridge around it. Thinking along the lines something like a thick posterboard that could be slathered up with glue and painted to cover everything flat, giving a papery drywall-like surface. Is there such a material? Ideas?

Don't ask.
Are you planning on using foil backed foam? If so I might try something like vinyl wall paper or other sheet plastic. (Maybe use spray adhesive instead of wall paper paste).
Another option could be thin sheet metal.

I like your 1/8" hardboard better than the cardboard it's. I could live with the minor ridge and this could be painted to match the door. "8 x 3/4" pan head screws would work perfect for this. Poster board will never last the way hardboard would

After a little more digging I may have found the answer...

"backer laminate"

It's the hardboard-like laminate that's used on the underside of particle board surfaces (think school desk). Rigid, thin, tough. Not sure of a source for this but I may settle for the cheapest 'normal' laminate sheet I can find instead and then paint over. Should be able to attach w/ contact adhesive.
