I would like to add insulation to my 9' x 7' steel garage door. I am in Southern Ontario where we still get -25 degree C winter nights and 35 degree C summer scorchers. The door faces the south so in the summer the garage gets very hot. What is the most economical but efficient material to use? I have just under 2 inches on space from the door to the brackets. I have been looking at a product called HD 160 Isolofoam. It is 1 7/8 " thick. If I do go with some kind of foam board what should I be looking for? ie reflective on one side etc. Thanks for the help.

I picked up a couple of the foil/bubble wrap type insulation kits on Amazon last year and did my door (16') and it made a significant difference, though, I am in North Texas so we do not see many days that are below 15-20 degrees F. I would probably use one of those kits as a nase /reflective layer, and the layer the foam board on top of it. If need be, you could fashion some retainers for the board from metal strap.

On my old wood doors, I screwed 1/2" polyiso foil faced on them.

Are the doors you have right now, just steel or are they insulated ? You may need to adjust the spring tension after adding insulation.

A picture would help.

Get rigid insulation that is polyiso based, foil faced would probably be the best finish. The R value on polyiso versus styrofoam is a lot greater. You can find it pretty easy at most commercial building supply. ABC Supply down here has it in stock, not sure what you guys have up north.

The doors are not insulated presently. I have read on a few places that polyiso doesn't suit our northern climate well. It is good for heat but breaks down below 50 F. I am not sure I will adjust the spring tension myself as I have heard what those springs can do if you don't know what you are doing (and I dont). If I can only get foil on one side should it face the door or the inside of the garage? I appreciate everyone's help.
