Garage door keeps going up and down

I have a screw drive genie pro 88. The door keeps going up and down multiple times and with a slight push then the door comes down. Nothing is obstructing the sensors and the light on the sensor is stable. I've emailed Genie to get the owners manual, maybe they need some adjustment somewhere. The door opener has to be from the early '90's. It has a separate box with a antenna on it for the remotes. There is a big nylon nut and screw in the back and I tried adjusting it with no improvement.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

My previous garage door acted weird like that. Pull the cover off and check for a burnt circuit board. It was the 'going up and down issue' I had. But, had to replace it anyway, motor gears got stripped where the chain. Oh well.

Google troubleshooting whatever model you have. See if there's a manual online.

Have a remote go missing recently?
Neighbor might be messin with ya.
But with that said I would take all the batteries our of every remote just to be sure one doesn't have a stuck button. Might be an indicator light on the box to show remote signal is made. Make sure it is out.
Disconnect the separate remote box maybe.

My daughter nudged the little laser sensor on the bottom with her bike and it caused this issue, since the 2 lasers were no longer aligned. Might do a quick check for alignment as well as any obstructions at the bottom. I've also had this same problem when one of the rollers came out of the bracket which caused the entire thing to bind up right before touching down. Although it could be something more intricate like a circuit board, start with the easiest fixes first.

Cover or disconnect the antenna. Other things run on that frequency and could be causing the issue. Eliminate the easy stuff first.

Is it going all the way to the floor before it reverses? Does the light flash when it does? Does it pause before reversing, or is it immediate?

My last screw drive (1999 or so) had some type of limit switch that if the door hit tension the screw would distort and trip the switch. Somehow the door is down switch over rode that. Could be your "door is down" switch is misaligned. Its in the head somewhere.

Yes, a weird frequency generator used to be able to trip it, I think I last heard it was something to do with a classified aircraft taking off, but that was 30 years ago. My modern ones have rolling frequencies, making it harder for that stuff to work (2005 vintage)

As said above, just get the model number off the plate, you can google a manual quickly.

I think it's the limit switch, the sensors, there seems to be some rust and corrosion on the. The sensors light are steady and strong.

About 10 years back a Navy carrier visited a town a friend lived in. Folks who lived near the beach kept having their garage doors open and close for no apparent reason. Stopped happening when the ship left.

I changed the limit switches with no success. I am now considering the sensors. I did an experiment with them unplugged and the door will only go down or up with the switch held down, this must be a safety feature. Once I plugged the sensors back in the garage opened and closed perfectly. I might have given the sensors a "soft" reset. Will have to change these out soon. One sensor has 4 wires the other end 2. I don't seem to see compatible sensors with the connectors like I have.

Is this happening at random times or only when you use a remote and/or wall button to trigger the door? Bad wiring to the switch or poor connections at the opener could be the issue.

only happens when i press the clicker or wall switch, never happens on its own.

Can you temporally bypass each of the sensors/limit switches? For the limit switches you may want to connect something like a simple light switch so you can manually trigger the limits. The idea is to simulate/bypass each of the opener inputs that might trigger a fault and thus door reversal.

The lights are a bit harder to bypass, think there is a safety circuit in there, thus the 4 wires to one side. My newer set won't work if unplugged, and jumping is harder then, I recall.

It also might be the over load protection. I'm not sure how it functions but if the load on the opener is high due to say track damage maybe it's the over load. On my opener it trips when an object is in the way even if the beam isn't interrupted.
