I would like to switch my garage door opener lights over to the cfl's however the socket is to deep for every cfl i have. It will not let it tighten down. Anyone else have this problem? If so did you find one that works?

Also do a search, some users find there are issues with interference with the remotes when using CFLs. (open the door, drive out, light is still on, can't close door with remote!)

Considering how long these lights are turned on (a few minutes a day) I'd stick with incandescent bulbs myself...

CFLs are a poor choice for GDO applications. The intermittent use can reduce the lamp life, and most CFLs don't achieve full brightness for a minute or so, leaving you with dismal light when you need it most. Use an A19 ("regular bulb shape") LED or one of the newer high-efficacy halogens (100watts of light at only 70 watts draw, for example) instead. Unless, of course, your GDO is a primary light source as well.

If you are set on using CFLs, use ones made by Sylvania that resemble old-fashioned lamps. I use these in various places where fitting a spiral or u-tube lamp that has a large base is not possible. Another bonus is the entire spiral lamp is enclosed by a rather heavy plastic casing, making them practically rough-service.

If your opener has a motion sensor, it may very well not work at all with CFL bulbs. Lots of those are not compatible with the bulbs.

The lights are actually in a good spot to use them for working in the garage. That's why I wanted to change them. I have always liked the light fluorescents produce and every other light i have inside or outside of my house and garage are fluorescent. More about personal preference then performance.
