Shopping for new garage door and found something interesting. 16X7 insulated and in hurricane area so needs to be good for 160 mph winds, do not need a door opener. Got 2 prices on Cloplay $4200 and $4700. The way I read the papers they are 24 ga. Got a price on a Hass and they quoted a door with 26 ga metal. Said the color I want, wood grain, to pass inspection only comes in 26 ga. Does that sound correct, is 26 gauge thick enough?? The price on the Hass is $3500 for model Haas rmt-670. Here is the message I received.

Understand your looking for a long panel insulated and if your located in cape 26 gauge is the only available option to pass code with the color you want

Muddling my through this shopping experience. Stopped at Home Depot and asked about faux wood finish insulated 16X7 door and was given a quote $4656 installed, $3495 no install. Gage and such are not in the Spinglish speaking ladies vocabulary.

Stopped at Lowes and asked for a quote, installed or uninstalled he asked, installed I answered. Don't buy it here if you want it installed the installer is having nothing but problems. OK give me a uninstalled quote. He says the doors we are getting are damaged and missing parts we do not even want to sell them anymore. OK, who is making your doors? Wayne Dalton he replies.

I really hate hard sell pushy salesman LOL

I have found a local Independent shop that I trust to buy parts from and order replacement doors through. They are not associated with a "Home Center" or Big Box Store; there must be good independent shops in Florida.

Thanks for the response. I am getting quotes from independent shops none of them are cooperating for ordering a self installed door and fudging on the gauge. The highest quote I have is for a 27 gage Cloplay # 4305W6 insulated wood grain. I have a quote on the same model # from another company that the salesmen told me is 24 gage and is supported by the literature. This area was hit by a hurricane and is in a building boom so dealers are all super busy, best one in the area told me 1 month for an estimate!

I am totally talking out of school here. Having spent a lot of time in Florida, I think the hurricane stiffening is all separate from the door and mounted on the inside. The skin is not really relevant to that. If you just want the thicker one, then hooray, go ahead. I think the skin is going to be cosmetically ruined in a hurricane whether it's 24, 26, or 27, if there's any debris around at all. They'll all be ruined.

I just mention that using ESP to try to understand what we're even talking about.
