My brother-in-law (that I work for) just bought a new shop (built in 1985). It has a garage door opener that has the old 3 button controller kind of like this:

BUT, has no working remote openers to put in vehicles.

The shop has a 20' ceiling, so we haven't climbed up to look at the opener yet, but my question: Is there something that can be wired up by the 3 button controller that will support universal remotes?

The easiest and cheapest will be to get the garage mate app for your smart phone. $30 for the blue tooth kit and go from there. As long as the opener has a 24 volt circuit, it should work. I have this app and love opening my overhead doors with my phone.

look up there and see if you have a blue wire hanging out of it somewhere. If there is that is the antenna for the remote. If not it probably doesn't support a remote opener directly to the opener itself. As to your question on that switch, I'm sorry I can't help you there. If it does have an antenna wire hanging outside some where, take the cover off and look in there and figure out what the frequency is and you can order them online for 12 or 15 dollars.,
Good luck, Stafford

It may or may not have a receiver attached. If you see an antenna wire hanging out of it then yes and you will need the manufacturer and model and freq. if not then you should be able to buy a receiver and remotes and mount it to the opener. Most openers can be made to work. Some need a 24v power source others don't.
