I currently have 3 manual 10x10 coiling doors in my shop. I am contemplating adding an electric operator to one or more of the doors to be able to park my truck in. It looks like my the Liftmaster LJ8950W is a viable and somewhat affordable option.

My question is: is there a way to add a light to this type of opener? Liftmaster sells their version of a light that is compatible, however it is "wifi, wireless, etc", and most importantly $75.....

Is there not a way to wire a light to come on when the opener is energized?Been thinking about adding a motion light, but there may be other options out there.

Lots of "smart" automation you can do for less. Check out wyze.com.

They have some door/window sensors, that you can add a rule to turn on lights when they open/close. The catch is you need a camera (20$) as the hub for the door and windows sensors. Obviously you need wifi as well.

I think you could spend 75$ there (or less) and have a much more flexible system that will open up other possibilities (like activate when man door is opened as well, or by schedule).

You would be looking at:
Wyze Cam (20$)
Wyze Sense (20$)
Wyze bulb (8$ each)

The smart stuff can be a little overwhelming for some, but my 67 yr old dad is figuring it out (only calls me for help a little)!

I would think an old style micro switch to turn on a timer switch would work.
It would be a home brew
Maybe check the youtube for ideas ?

I have a motion light mounted on the ceiling in my attached garage. As soon as I enter from either the house door, or the man door, the light turns on. Also when I use the opener and the garage door opens, the light also comes on, although the opener does have a light on it.

All of Liftmaster's jackshaft openers use the external wireless light. I guess it makes sense to allow the light to be placed in a better spot than right next to the door. Given this, I don't think there would be an easy way to hack together a light from another Liftmaster opener, at least not very easily. And if you did, I'll bet you'd end up close to the same cost or more than if you just buy the one they sell.

However, if you do come up with a way, by all means, please let us know! Good luck.

I installed a motion switch in my garage so when I pull my car in the lights all turn on.

I looked through the installation manual for the Liftmaster LJ8950W and there isn't a wiring diagram or mention of provisions for hard wiring a light, so for that particular opener it appears their wireless light option is your only choice.

It is labeled as commercial use only, and it's pretty typical for that type of opener to not have a light included.
