I have a small vertical lift garage door(8ft) between shop and cold storage. I did not add an opener when it was installed. I am thinking I want one now. Is a wall mount opener my only option really? I didn’t realize how expensive those suckers were!

Can you share a photo or two of what we're working with? I expect that by "vertical lift" you mean that there isn't any horizontal track and that by "wall mount opener" you're referring to a jackshaft operator. Is the door sectional, roll up, or...? Depending on your wall height / space available / door type, a traditional operator could possibly be used. That said, a jackshaft operator for a 8' door isn't particularly expensive.

I think I paid about $400 an opener 7 years ago for the Liftmaster Jackshaft. I just paid $510 a couple months ago for the Chamberlain version. And Menards has a "Generic" version $415 before rebate. So they really haven't gotten that much more expensive. Maybe the commercial models?
