Sounds like you might be inexperienced doing that sort of thing. Be careful. Do you have any nearby friends more familiar with electrical?

With that being said, Yes, but realize that if you change the receptacle, code requires GFCI protection. That receptacle is probably not on a separate circuit, so you might want to change the first receptacle on the string to GFCI even if you’re not expecting an inspector. My brother was almost killed because his garage circuit was not GFCI protected.

I see no pictures or icons for a picture.

But why does an outlet in the ceiling for the garage door opener require GFCI protection? It's unlikely to get wet I cannot reach it at 10 ft overhead without a ladder.

All garage outlets are required to be GFCI peotected now. Location doesnt matter

Exactly, you can plug in an extension cord.

Or the unlikely event that something major goes wrong with the opener and a metal garage door is electrified.

The safety monitors create rules to protect against worst case scenarios, even if it doesn't apply to you.

The GFCI for the opener cant be up on the ceiling. It has be readily accessible to reset it, not using a ladder. That doesn't mean using a extension cord either. The receptacle has to be up there, Just not the GFCI. Either a dead front GFCI on the wall or protected by a GFCI circuit.

Here are his pics (the easiest way to see what is going on when they don't show up is to click on the quote button to see what the poster typed)

He hasn't mentioned where he lives, if he's in another country besides the US the regulations may be different.

correct, here if the garage is detached different rules apply from attached. my detached did not need at arc fault or GFCI , except near sink .

Sorry for the delay message. I have attached garage and I live in NJ.

I am pretty sure this is a separate circuit. If extension cord is an option, which one should I buy?

If not, then I was thinking to extend from outlet next to it using conduit and use GFCI? Here's another picture.

Ok, it looks like you want to install some sort of smart/wifi remote for your garage door?

Sometimes people on Garage Journal can get carried away with the things... If I was in your shoes, I would just change out the current receptacle and add a standard duplex, or even easier would be to just add an adapter like this.

Thanks Git. Can you please tell me what do you mean by change current receptacle and standard duplex? How to choose receptacle? And is it allowed to change? little confusion here.

I am leaning toward the second option to add an adapter but I am not sure which one would be a safe choice.

You have a single and a duplex receptacle gives you two in the same format without having to tear out drywall.
Looks like the ones you most likely have throughout your house.

Find the breaker that feeds the receptacle but but even if that is a 20a circuit you can use a 15a duplex receptacle.

It looks like I have 15 amp circuit. I just tested it. Can't tell if it is GFCI or not. To me it looks it is not.

It looks like you have one of these

You should be able to just replace it with something like this.

They are both designed to fit into a 'single gang' box like this, unless your builder did something funky

But, some sort of adapter like I posted would work fine and is probably your easiest solution...

The outlet on the wall behind the shelves - check to see if that is perhaps a GFCI outlet just for curiosity sake

You could have just one gfci receptacle somewhere in there protecting the whole garage.

My folks have a house build in ‘92 where they (builder) hooked up an exterior receptacle to the gfci in the bathroom.

If you want to work on electric it might help to get a tester that is able to trip gfcis.

I just checked freeze gfci and I found out it is on a separate circuit. I was not able to locate any other gfci outlet in the garage.

I am started to lean towards adapter now.. as there are unanswered questions on GFCI outlet.
