Garage door opener problem w pics

I took down my opener so I could put sheekrock up on my ceiling, I got it back up and everything reconnected, after a short time it started to smoke. So I took the cover off and found what looks like some sort of disc with wires coming off of it and another wire laying on top melted to it.Here are some pics

hope you can see them well, can this part be replaced, what is it? It doesn't look like it would be hard to replace.

The opener is a Wayne Dalton model #3018.Thanks for any help.

Are there any markings on it? It looks like a capacitor or metal oxide varistor (MOV).

Do you know why it failed?

Yes, What aandpdan said. Those are MOV's or surge suppressors.
Could have been a bind in the motor?

I have no idea whats written on it, it's very hard to see. It's the wires coming put of the wall plug that it goes into.

I'd say you pinched those wires putting it back up.

See the discoloration in the top picture to the right of the nut ?

If it is an MOV then it should work fine without it but you'll lose surge protection. The electronics may need it due to the motor start/stop surges though.

If you're really ambitious Radio Shack may have them in the parts rack.

If Rat Shack doesn't , then you can order online from Digi-Key or Mouser electronics.
In Houston, we have a couple of locally owned electronics shops, one which is Ace Electronics on Antoine that I'm sure has it in stock. The other is EPO, and I'm sure they have them as well.

They're just standard MOV's rated at 300V usually. Even Fry's has them, although overpriced with their retail "**** everyone" pricing. http://www.frys.com/product/1799590

I don't think you pinched the wires, that's just the path the smoke traveled.....Up.

Now if you'd had been quick enough to catch the smoke, you could put it back in.....But I've never seen Anyone quick enough to catch it....Just an electronics joke....

Thanks for the help, I know the ground wasn't pinched, it looks close in the pics but there was alot of room there, the ground wire was on top of the part. I'll take them into Radio Shack and see what I can find, I did see the they said either 250V or 230V, I'm not much for eletrical stuff but I think this is something I could handle

Just use an Ohm meter and between that white wire and ground should be infinity (or at least a high reading) and the same for the black power lead to ground. The MOV's are designed to shunt any voltage higher than their rating to ground, hence the name surge suppressor, and they'll die in the process, therefore protecting the equipment to which they serve.

Just cut the old ones off and put some new ones on, you should be just fine.

You also might want to call Wayne Dalton, they have decent customer service or did at one time. I'm sure you could get the replacement part from them.
