Garage door opener randomly quits working

Hey gang, don't know if this is the right place for this, so please move if needed

I have a Chamberlain 3/4hp opener with 2 remotes and a exterior keypad. I would guess it's 5-7 years old. For seemingly no reason, the remotes and the keypad will fail to work. After a day or two of using the main button, it will seemingly "reset", and all will be fine for awhile. I've tried batteries, resetting, checked the lock button... Nothing. The only constant is that it seems if you fumble-finger the code on the keypad, it's sure to quit working. Sometimes, when it quits, as little as one cycle using the main button will "reset" it.

Any ideas?

Couple of things to try:

1. Disconnect the main button. Some of the systems have a lock function to them and that would prevent your remotes and keypad from working.

2. Is one of your remotes perhaps not releasing the button all the way? On my Chamberlain if the button is still pressed on 1 remote it ignores the input of another.

Where are you located? I just fixed my sister's door opener… was having a fault with the sensors. When she finally told me it only happens when it get-s bitter cold I figured out there was a conductor broken inside the wire insulation, and when cold enough everything would shrink enough to lose contact. Warms back up and it would work.

What color learn button? (red?) - Are you near a military installation? (can ya guess where I'm going here?)

The wall station button will flash if lock is on, instead of it's usual solid state.

Other interference issues that can arise - CFL and LED bulbs in proximity (both have transformers that often tend to screw things up); and check that the antenna wire is hanging down - not tucked up in the light cover.

I had the same problem. Then I noticed that the light/sensor (along the floor) that stops the door was not lining up with the sensor on the other side of the door. I must have bumped it and knocked it out of line. The red light was off on the side of the sensor, which means it wasn't lining up with the other sensor. I lined it up and it has worked perfectly since.

Interesting to hear about the cfl and led's. I may have to re-think my current light set-up, one cfl on the opener and a led on each side...

Thanks everyone!

-learn button is purple, and no military in the area (that we know of:eek:)
The buttons on the remotes seem fine. When it happens, neither remote will work, nor the keypad
I can't remember if I have cfl bulbs in the opener or not, don't think so, and the remaining garage lighting is comprised of 4' frourescent fixtures
If the sensor was out of alignment, mwouldn't it keep the door from functioning at all, or at least just blink the lights when tried? It functions normally when something is blocking it, so I think it's ok???:headscrat
Happens year-round, regardless of temperature
I'll pull the main button and check it, as well as move the antenna around...

Thanks a ton for the ideas

I missed the part about a fumble on the pin with the keypad - being a root cause...

Let's say thats very abnormal - pop the battery out of the keyless entry - see if it has continues - sounds like the keyless entry is fubared and maybe stuck transmitting for extended periods.
