Hello,
I am ready to order garage doors for new home/garage.

Just wondering what brand the forum likes or any to stay away from. It's a 3 car with (3) 10' wide doors x 9' high. Insulated, material, etc.? Where to purchase? Do it yourself or hire pro?

I live in southern Va if that makes a difference for type of door.

My current and past homes have had Lift Master openers. I've never had an issue and would buy them again. I want to add the option for wireless (through my smartphone) operation but I have to retrofit it now. I'd buy the one already set up for it if I had to do over again. I live in Chesterfield and have dealt with Amelia Door company. I feel they treated me right.

I've had Genie and Craftsman openers in the past. No real issues with either. I recently replaced a broken Genie with a Craftsman belt drive. I think it's just a rebranded Chamberlain unit. It's my first belt drive as all of my others have been chain drive. I highly recommend the belt drive units as they are really quiet, which is a plus if you have a bedroom over the garage like we do.

Also, DIY installs aren't that hard if you're handy (which most here are). The hardest part is probably calibrating it once it's installed, but that's really just following the instructions.

I've had a lot of electronic problems with Genie's from about 2006-2010 and their customer service (everyone's customer service) leaves a lot to be desired. Also, they won't stand behind their guarantee. I mean, they will have a 5 year warranty on something and the operator won't function, and they will say that it is not because of a faulty part, rather a faulty component or some bogus excuse. Simply put, their customer service and warranty is no good.

I have a Liftmaster overhead opener that was in the house when I moved in 7 years ago. It's been very good to me. I just put in a CHI insulated steel door. So far, I love it. No complaints at all.

I've lived in a few different houses, and consequently had a variety of door openers. Self install is possible, but can be a pain. By luck, one year we went to a home owner convention of some sort where they try to sell you windows, roofing, jacuzzi tubs, garage door openers, etc. Kind of cool in one way -- but tiring after awhile. Anyhow, with several door opener companies at the place, they were slicing each other's throat on pricing. I had been looking around before and ended up buying one there that was was $50 less than any deals I could find before, included free install and had tax included so that wasn't a separate charge.

1. Craftsman - A few older homes I've lived in had older Craftsman door openers. One was great, just looked old. Another had issues and made weird sounds when opening. The latter was a rental unit, and the owner had no desire to fix.

2. Genie - I owned 2 homes where I installed these units. Both screw drives. I liked them quite a bit. Went with the larger 3/4 HP vs 1/2 HP motors. Never had issues at either house.

3. Liftmaster - This came pre-installed at my most recent house purchase. It's a belt drive model and quiet like the others said. It has gadgetry out the ying yang. And I noticed the other day I don't think the eyes are calibrated or hooked up properly as I was horsing around tried to stop the door by waiving my foot/leg in front of the sensor and it didn't stop. Also, I noticed it sounds like it sometimes "struggles" to get the door all the way open. Not sure if that is part of how belt drives work or not. Maybe the door has too much tension on the springs. Overall I like the unit, I'm just not up to speed with it.

I'm thinking of installing doors and openers myself. Some of the quotes are quite expensive. Anyone have suggestions on where to purchase doors and openers? I will need (3) 10w x 8'9" tall doors insulated, with openers, raised panel look with the stockton windows. I'm thinking this will be (5) 21" panels per door.

I have a genie belt drive and I like it quite a bit.

If you buy an opener at Lowes they will come install it for another hundred bucks.

I've had good luck with both Genie and Craftsman. Tried a chain-drive Chamberlain once and only got 7 or 8 years out of it - replaced it with a Genie.

My experience: screw drives seem to hold up longer and operate quieter than chain drives, but they're a pinch more expensive.

I don't know about the sensor issue. Have you used your hand to completely cover the sensor? Are the lights functioning on both sensors?

Many of the new Liftmaster openers have soft start and stop capabilities. Are you sure this isn't what you are hearing? About the last foot of travel, it will slow down before it stops. What model is this? 3280? 8355?

CHI or Raynor with a Liftmaster opener is the best way to go. Doorlink is a decent door out of KC but knowing Raynor and CHI are going to be around in 5-10 years is a good enough reason to stick with the best! Liftmaster best way to go unless you have small in insulated doors or vinyl back then Linear good second option.
