Hi Scout,

I have a 14' x 8' isulated door and I chose the Cahamberlain 3/4hp chain drive door opener and I am very pleased with it.
As for any garage door, simply make sure that it's well adjusted and that the rension springs can hold it in mid-opened position, that way your door opener will work as it is supposed to.

I have a low ceiling so loosing overhead space, using traditional chain on track type, is a no-no for me. I prefer the jackshaft style like Liftmaster 8500.

Although not a ceiling height concern for me, I too chose the 8500's for my doors. Very happy with them and they are so quiet!

IMO Linear makes the best operator on the market. You will have to find a professional installer to purchase one because they are not sold to the open public. Stay away from Genie brand openers.

I have a Raynor residential operator on my 16w x 8h and a Raynor commercial operator on my 12w x 12h. Both are about 23 years old and there has not been a single issue with either of them so far.

Liftmaster 8500....simple install, no center tracks, none quieter.

I have 3 on my house and shop...love 'em.

I definitely agree. Jackshaft style opener is awesome. I have low ceilings in my garage as well. 8'. Didn't want the opener hanging down while I'm flailing around in there with whatever crazy project I've got going on.

It also left room for another light in the middle of the garage.

My opener came with a remote lamp to mount to the ceiling. I tore that apart and stole the brains out of it and installed them into the center fluorescent lamp fixture. So, the opener turns that lamp on when it runs or senses motion.
