Garage door opener reversal?

Long story short, I have an older type craftsman door opener. I closed the door on a ladder and messed up the L shaped bar that connects from the top-center of the door to the chain drive. I have fixed that and the door once again rolls freely both directions by hand. The door is in the down position, everything is engaged, and when I push the button the door tries to go down, and fails because it is already down. How do I reverse it so It'll go up?

i'd try disconnecting the door, and operate the opener, see what happens then
if it goes up, manually open the door and reconnect it to the opener, and repeat the process.

or, i wonder if when you straightened the bent parts, the door is probably not as "perfect" as it was.
may need to adjust the door travel limit

just a guess :headscrat

It goes down when disconnected also.

It's ancient, new enough for laser sensors, older than my mom's she replaced in about 1995. Its for a single wide 7' tall door . I can give you no more info, I just don't know. They can't vary that much....The door thinks it is up, how do you make an opener reverse?

take a look up at the opener end, around the chain/belt/ screw.
something has to be out of place, or broken, could the chain have jumped, gears stripped ?

something has to tell the opener it's up or down.....

If you had the chain off of it make sure the opener was in the down postion when you put the chain back on. It could be in the wrong sequence.

The chain was off the sprocket, and I loosened, reinstalled, and tightened it.

My worst case so far is remove the chain, put the door in the UP position where I want it, and reinstall the chain.

However, I'm convinced there's a switch or something I don't know about/can't see

Found this: "This will happen when the lower bushing goes out on the gear and sprocket shaft. The limits skip timing and eventually the door doesn't know where it actually is during travel. A good Garage door company can fix this for you or you can order a gear and sprocket assembly with bushings from sears on line."

The only settings are for the travel of the door and open and closing force.

is there is alot of slack in the chain? if so the bushings in the gear and sprocket assy. are shot! this will allow the little gear that drives the limit assy. to skip, throwing off your up and down settings. repairable item!!

NO, I just re-tensioned the chain and it's pretty snug, was OK before. I'm thinking I just reinstalled it in the wrong location. I'll try to re-index the chain before I pay for parts.

It could be the gear kit . If you take the cover off and it a lot of nylon shavings in there it is going bad or is bad. They are not that bad to change.

I had the same thing happen while replacing mine. Unhook the chain and cycle the opener to where you want it. Then hook the chain back up.

I feel like a fricken CHAMPION!

I just loosened the chain and moved it to where I wanted and it worked like a charm. Had to adjust the closing settings, but overall was pretty easy, even after staying up late watching Bowl games and working 12 hrs today. Thanks for the help GJers
