Garage door opener too much power

Went to open the overhead door on the shop this morning. Hit the remote in the truck, door didn't open, so pressed it again. Door came up about a foot. Got out to investigate, lifted the door the rest of the way open. Apparently the door was froze to the floor. When the opener tried to lift it, it tore the entire top rail off the door. Guess the up sensitivity wasn't adjusted correctly. Now I have some work to do.

Hope your opener has a up force and down force adjustment on it. I've seen some that don't. Hope you're able to repair door.

My door during this cold spell was stopping about a foot off the floor. When I hit the opener again it would close. If I helped it just a little it would work fine. Yesterday I greased the center tail and ran it disconnected a few times then tried it and it was OK. If it continues I will adjust the up force.

I knew they had a down force, but I didn't know they had a up force adjustment.

Must be an older opener. I replaced an ancient one that damaged the top rail to a lesser extent. IIRC the new opener has auto-sensing force adjustment. Probably to protect the belt drive.

I haven't had an issue with our garage overhead door freezing itself to the floor, but I keep the garage heated to 50F all the time so the door is always warm, at least on the inside. My neighbor had her garage door freeze down and it took a while to get it open so she could get her car out. We ended up chiseling under the door and in one area we poured boiling water to melt the ice. It worked, we got the door open, probably not the smartest thing to do, but we couldn't think of anything else to do.

Never seen an opener without both! They both need to be adjusted properly or you end up with problems like the OP. Opener should have simply shut off!

Lesson here is if door doesn't open don't just hit the button again, find out why! Save yourself a bunch of time and money!

In the last cold snap ours went up most of the way and stopped. The problem was that it was just high enough to scrape up the truck roof as we backed out. Ouch. I turned the force up just a hair and it worked fine, but the next day I lubed everything just in case. Trying to get into the habit of checking the door in the mirror now before moving.

It has up and down force adjustment. Last time it was adjusted was by an installer a few years ago. Will check out the extent of damage today. First time I pressed the button the door didn't move, so I thought the opener didn't get the signal. Second time it did.

Yep. It went up fine once free of the floor.

To try to prevent this I always sweep the garage floor whenever the garage door is open and there's snow at or near where the seal sits. In addition, I wipe down the seal.

My garage door is just a single, and it well balanced with the spring. I have both forces adjusted to the minimum position.
