Has anyone tried to mount an opener on it's side so as to pull open a sliding style shed door.Ten foot wide door rolls ok, just would really like an opener.

I've got one mounted upside down and it's been working ok for about 5 years. I don't see why it woudn't work on it's side. Probably would need to keep all of the slop out of the chain.

I have done it.
You have to build your own bracing and put a 90 degree twist in the "L" bar.
I ended up with about 8 inchs of door not opening all the way.
(10 foot wide doorway and 9 foot 4 inchs of opening.)
(I also used and extension on the track.)
It was a garage sale unit and I am not sure of the HP.
I used it for about 5 years before going to overhead doors.
