my garage door opener took a **** on me and need a new one. what are some reasonable priced ones out there that are good.

i have a 1/2hp chain driven one now. lasted 9 years with everyday use.

dont want to change the wall switch and beams. just was to replace the motor and 2 new remotes if possible.

Just dump the existing unit and install a complete belt drive opener. You will be happier when you don't have to fool with it for another 10 years.
I just bought two Liftmaster 8500's for my shop but a conventional style belt drive is a very good unit.

Or........depending on what went wrong......rebuild the existing unit in true garage journal mode.......common problem the plastic gear goes way. Easy fix for less $20.00

not really sure of the problem. dont **** with it yet.

95% of the time when it goes up or down it will just stop. when it stops going down the motor will stop and the door will drop down about 6-12inches. it does this at all diff points. nothing is constant. its not like when the beam is broken it stops dead. the beams are fine and when the motor stops the door still keeps falling (if going down) about 6-12inchs. diff everytime. when it does that i tryed to pull up on the door to make sure it didnt disengage and it didnt..... when it does this ordeal i need to play with the buttons to make it go all the way down or up by pushing the button **** ton of times to make it go up or down (unless i can get to the safe cord in the middle. sometimes i cant bc ill have something in the middle of the garage)

Ok, first off, make sure your door is balanced, you may have a broken spring, or it just isn't balanced. Sounds to me like it is really heavy, it shouldn't be dropping down at all when the opener stops.

From there try your opener again, it may work just fine, the whole problem just may be that your door isn't balanced. From there I don't know what to tell you, it would be helpful to know the brand.

its been fine since 2006 until a month ago. never had one problem. used everyday.

also when it does that the light on the motor spazzes out. flicking like a SOB. no patthener either. just goes crazy.

when the door stops lets say half way when this happens. the motor quits and the door keeps dropping couple of inches then stop. when it does that i tried pulling up as if you where going to open the door and it doesnt move a hair. just locked in place.

from there the only way to move the door up or down is to play with the button or pully the safety cord in the middle. when the playing with the button it will move a foot or an inch or whatever it feels like or it may not move at all.

Ok that helps. Sounds to me like a circuit board issue. Normally when the light starts flashing randomly like that it is never good.

Being that it is 9 years old, I would say replace the whole opener. I would also recommend that you change the eyes and wall button as well. For the time it takes to actually do it, you aren't really doing yourself any favors by not changing them. Besides that, you would have to replace the old opener with a Chamberlain/LiftMaster product to re use the eyes and the old wall button will not work with a new opener anyway.

And again, make sure your door is balanced, it shouldn't pull the opener down at all when you stop it.

i dont stop it. it stops it self when the motor stops at any given time and then when that happens it drops some.

I get that, I'm just saying that it shouldn't drop at all. Whether it stops by itself or if you hit the button to stop it.

Anyone recommend a opener that is good and won't break the bank?

IMO, the best out there is a chain or belt driven LiftMaster(made by Chamberlain), can't buy it off a shelf in a store, but may be able to buy one from a local dealer. Other than that, a belt or chain drive Chamberlain would be the next best thing that you can pick up from a big box store.

The LiftMaster and Chamberlain are the same as far as the motor end, but the Liftmaster is an upgrade from a Chamberlain off the shelf. The LiftMaster will be the more expensive, but you are getting a better product. The Chamberlain is just a cheaper version.

this a good one at a good price?

Check for a broken spring first! With the door closed, click it to manual and try lifting the door. If you can't lift it, there's your problem.

if i recall i had to do that couple of times so it should be fine.
