Garage door opener

Currently, I'm working on my own garage and will be putting in a new garage door. From the top of my garage opening to the ceiling, I have 22". By the book, 32" radius track will take me up to 24", which is slightly too high. 20" radius will still be a little low for my liking. Nice this about high-lift setup is that I can get EXACTLY what I need and put that door just where I want it. Now, can the 32" radius be made to fit...maybe??? I might just give it a try to see.

If the 32 radius is too much you can just cut what you need off the vertical track as long as it isn't more that about 6" or so. If you cut more there may not be enough adjustment in the top fixture to get the top section flush against the opening.

On my rear door the 8 x 8 I have about a 100" vertical and 32 radius on top of that and am using a standard opener with a dummy section. You can see it inmy garage pics.

100" of high-lift means REALLY tall ceilings. I'd love to have that much space. Maybe some day.

Not 100" of high lift, the vertical track is 100" long. A standard vertical track for an 8' high door is 88", so that means it has about 12" of high lift and 32 radius track on top of that. My ceilings are 12' tall.

Ohhh...I thought it was 100" high-lift. You can figure how awsome that would be! Full vert!
But still...12' ceilings would be GREAT for me.

I would like to see a video of a trolley op on a door with a small amount of highlift. If its possible to do that it would solve a lot of problems for us in commercial applications. We do it all the time on 20R and 32R; with 32R we've found that it is necessary to install the next size longer operator rail or the door will hang in the opening a foot.

We've been in business since 1964; we have always installed jackshafts if the top roller is below the horizontal splice.

Sweet! That's gotta roll nice. My ceilings are 9' 4.5", doors are CHI 4-section 9x8's. 15R with 3280's was tight, but there was no way I was going to stick 12R in with 24" sections.

I am not a fan of 12 r either I would rather use 15 and cut a couple of inches off the vert if I needed.

I just remembered my rear door is 7' tall with a 22" dummy section.

Wish I had a video of a high lift door with a standard opener but to me it is work not thinking of filming after we are done, nor do I install much anymore.

Yea, somebody up above say that a normal opener rail worked on 32"R, but I've always had to use a longer opener rail also.
I'm with Nova65ss about the 15"R being better. There's just so much 12"R out there now. Many places, like CHI that was mentioned even have a 10"R...which I just don't like. It's rough. I'd rather have 15"LH before having 10"R normal.

Just wanted to post that I found this thread while researching the Idrive. I am damn glad that I found it. I thought I was going to be king ding-a-ling with the drive alone and getting rid of the controller in the middle of the ceiling. Now I learned that I can mod my tracks. Oh boy can't wait to get this all done. :D

Here's my set-up for 10'4" ceilings, with torsion bar springs the lift doesn't have to be in the center, I put both on the inside edges. As you can see in the second pic you have to extend the trolley pull and you need the extra long track to get it up to the ceiling..

So there is not issue what so ever with mounting the open off center?

I have a very low ceiling and need to offset the opener to push it up between the rafters a bit that way it will give me the required 2" gap between the door and trolley track. Will this cause issues with the opener? I will post pics later tonight to show my situation.

I use the Wayne Dalton Idrive "torsion spring" model
http://www.wayne-dalton.com/DirectDrive.asp
And you can pick it up at Lowes if you have one of those nearby! Nice and quiet. THe door itself becomes the loud part.

I have an earlier version of this. Love it. Mine is quiet and has a battery / charger setup. So even if the power goes out, and I'm outside, the door will still lift on power from the batteries.

The battery pack and motor are contained in this unit:
