Garage Door Opener

AGAIN I did a search and haven't found an answer. So, will an out of the box opener from Sears or Big Box store work with an 8' tall garage door?

I'm leaning toward a belt drive Chamberlain unit that HD has on sale this week. Seems that for an 8' tall door the belt (or chain or screw) would need to be longer. Do the box units accomodate the taller door? Would I need to order an extension ( ) kit?

Are the belt kits the latest thing i openers? Thanx for your time.

Beltdrives have been around going on 10 years now, it's all we use. An opener from a hardware store will only work up to a 7' door. Far as I know they don't make an extension kit for the beltdrive to work an 8' door as the belt would need to be longer also. I know they do make extension kits for the screw type it is basically just an extra piece of rail and screw. Screwdrives are good but they get noisier as they get older. Might want to see if you can purchase a liftmaster from a local dealer, it's worth a try.

Jimmy the LiftMaster units are the same as the Chamberlain and they do make a 8 or 10 foot rail extention, it is available on chamberlain-diy.com or at your local lows or home depot.

If you are buying the one at Sears, they also have the kit to convert to an 8' door. It comes with the rail extension and a new belt. I just bought mine yesterday, the kit was $47.99.
