Garage door opener

I'm looking to install openers for the overhead doors. The doors are 11' 7" tall. Can anyone give advice on a manufacturer that makes openers for tall doors?

Find an opener you think you like and check the specs. Most all the big names make openers for oversize/odd doors.

12' rails are available for most belt or chain operators for an additional charge from a dealer, and jackshafts work fine in most cases. Just as long as it's a sectional door and not a barrel type.

Residential openers can go to 10' but not from a box store. Liftmaster ATS can go to 14'. That would be your best bet as it is also available in 12'.

I believe any standard 1/2 hp opener can raise a door 12' or more. I know Craftsman can. My doors are 8' high, ceiling is 13'. The tracks take doors 12' up and then back. I had a garage door company install the doors, I installed the openers. They provided me with a one piece T-rail for each opener. Never measured them but I'm guessing they're 12'-14' long.

Adjusting the up/down stop points was a bit of a pain. When I did the first one I turned one screw too far and thought I stripped it. Took opener apart and saw the adjustments are 2 plastic screws with a piece that turns along the screw until it hits the microswitch on each end. Final adjustment had them running pretty close to the full distance the screws allowed. Hard to explain and was many years ago, but if you have to do that it isn't hard to figure out..

Those are the only way to go, imo. I installed 2 on my new shop and they're great.

I have an 10w x 8 high from Menards.
It was a "special order" since it was not an on the shelf item.

That opened the door to any and all factory options.
Just fill out the special order form correctly.
The door came with all the correct items to "follow for the roof slope" ceiling.
That included the correct angle cut on the tracks.

The opener was an off the shelf Chamberlin with an off the shelf extension kit.

Both were installed by 2 first time garage door install carpenters with no problems.
"We just followed the instructions."

2 years with no problems.

I used the standard liftmaster jackshaft type on my 14' x 14' doors and they work great. The doors are 2" thick with foam insulation and are pretty heavy.

The only thing you have to be concerned about is how many times you open and close them in a specified amount of time due to overheating. In a residential environment it's not normally an issue.

If you don't require the doors to open all the way on a regular basis you can use a regular door opener w/wo the extension to 9' by mounting it to the ceiling instead of the wall above the door. You then extend the "bar" that connects the open to the door to fit. The opener can be set for up to whatever length the opener rod is and if you want full height you drop the "bar" and do it by hand. I did this with 10' doors with an 11' ceiling. The opener was 10' from the wall. I had a very low profile car and built a storage platform over the parking spot and had the opener only open the first 4 or 5'.

It lets you make full use of the track length.
