New to this website but glad the Forum is available. We recently moved and unfortunately had to leave my old garage behind. Nevertheless planning on redoing my new house's. I have an attached 3-car and an attached 1-car but will be concentrating on the 3-car for now it is ~ 36 x 24, no posts. I have tall ceilings 12' and plan on adding decent lighting but dislike the traditional Garage Door openers with all the cheap brackets blocking the ceiling. A couple of years back I saw a Garage Door opener that mounted just above the door on the Joist however cannot locate that style. Is anyone familar with that type or have any experience or suggestions with other types?

Sounds like you are referring to a jack style opener. Commonly used to take your garage door up higher than regular openers.

Wayne-Dalton use to make an opener that was called the iDrive. The opener that is popular for clear ceiling mounting is the Liftmaster 3800.

If you are refering to an opener like these:

LiftMasters.jpg

They are Liftmaster 3800 units mounted to the jackshaft. In this case, they are roughly 15' above the floor and are raising 10' high doors leaving the tracks just below the lights.

Thanks for the quick responses. I believe the iDrive was the one I saw at some point however the Liftmaster will eliminate some clutter as well.

I have the i drives. I don't think they are available anymore. Too many issues with them. Getting close to changing them over to the Liftmaster 3800

Just installed Liftmaster 3800 and have about a month on it .... and love it . It is far quieter than the one I had , eliminates the overhead track and rod . Also don`t need to lube the track ... don`t have one . I also love the deadbolt , but make sure you get the battery backup in case the power goes off so you can get inside .
I haven`t put a meter on it yet , but a guy I know who is an instrumentation engineer did and said it draws about half the current his old one did .
I also wanted the fingerprint pad , but they have dropped that .... don`t really miss it , just wanted another toy to play with .
