My best advice is to replace it with a better opener.

You can tension the chain by tightening the bolt in front of the drive sprocket, but chances are it will do it again. Those openers are total junk in my opinion. We have changed out hundreds of them. When customers have issues with them, we always recommend just replacing them.

If you are in the market for a new one, LiftMaster or Chamberlain products are about the best bang for your buck, they are good and parts are readily available.

Thank you, sir, for the response ....
Its my experience , as to what is "junk" , is the installation and maintenance of openers .. and many other things . I see little to nothing wrong with the opener assembly , it worked OK , for years ..Then I finally decided to reinstall the cover .. rather than lubricate, clean and reset the cable/chain tension ..

You have a very valid point. However, I'm not going to sit here and tell you to invest a whole bunch of time into fixing it, when it is going to happen again. Plain and simple- it's a cheap opener. You can have an opener that works OK(for now), or you can install an opener that works good. It's up to you.

OEW: I nursed along my Craftsman chain style garage openers for almost 30 years until they were both finally toast. then we bought new doors which we should have bought when moving in and new openers and i barely hear them and they work perfect.

In my opinion it was money very well spent because the new openers are so much better than the old ones. i have a side mounted one and would have bought 2, but other door had a beam in the way.

good luck and i'll get the name of my openers if you are curious if you ask because i can't remember off hand now.
