Garage Door Opening Height

I just had concrete poured in my garage and the floor is 3" higher than what I had planned due to drainage issues and grading. It's framed based on an 8' high door. I've got a good 2+ feet over the door opening for track, etc, so I'm not worried about needing a low-profile track, or running out of space overhead.

I'm just wondering, should I worry about being 3" off on the door height or can a standard 8' door work with a 7'9" opening?

If you use a paneled garage door, the top of the top panel recess is going to be at the bottom of the door opening and the weather seal will not seal in the recessed area.

Do you already have the door? 7'9" doors are no big deal. It won't look right if it is a raised panel style door and you put an 8' door in there.

Are you planning on installing this yourself or having a Door Co do it? Your opening may be 3" lower, but after you install the stop moulding with the vinyl flap it will be even lower, as the two top sections are going thru the radius the lower section will hit the vinyl or maybe even the stop moulding. Make sure you mention this where ever you buy your door, they should be able to make adjustments for you.

If you're planning a raised panel door, depending on the manufacturer, you'll be cutting off at least 4" of reveal at the top of the door, If this matters to you it may look a little odd!

What do most installers typically charge for garage door installation?

Also, I'm looking at Wayne Dalton doors...should I consider another company?

I still have to do the final framing on the jams and have an 8" block stemwall to contend with at the bottom of the opening. I'm thinking about using a treated 2x10 and going by the stem wall with it....then recessing the garage door further into the garage and finishing that wall as it was the full 8" thick.

Impossible to answer, We don't even know if your in America! Unless you know someone that does it for a living or have a good friend recommend someone to you, I'd stick to a reputable Door Co! Get a few estimates..they're free. Chances are if you have any questions or warranty issues a Door Co will be reachable, a random installer..Who knows.

This could be the difference between a smooth install or a Friggin nightmare. Seen it happen to many people over the years. Good luck!

Don't know that you would need a 2x10..most framers just use a 2x6 If the stem wall sticks in past your framing, you can notch the board. If it needs to be shimmed, just remember to shim your header and spring pad as well.

can you raise the header ?

some companies will make the top panel shorter for you. Ask the supplier.

when I ordered my 13'6" it came with a short top panel.

I did the same thing on my floor. I went to Menard's and bought one door panel that was for a 7ft door. It was for the top. they are different. I explained what happened to the manager and he gave me a deal on it. Now I have one 13' door panel in my way. I have used it for a table sitting on saw horses.

I went to Lowe's last night to get the 2x10s so I can frame the openings... I got that done this morning. I ended up cutting 2 of the 2x10s to 111 inches to go across the bottom of the headers...the side garage door jams were 2x10 and 93" at the rear and 93.5" sloped out the door for runoff.

So it looks like I'm right at 9' x 7'9". I had to pickup some stuff from home depot and had them print me off some quotes on Clopay doors. They have a much better ordering system and had no problem plugging in those numbers. I'm going to get quotes from 2 local companies and have my wife look over design options so we can do some apples to apples comparisons.

Aside from Clopay, what other companies should I consider?
