Got up this morning and the door was open... Thought I was losing it since I would never leave it open.... Sitting here a few minutes ago and the thing goes up a ways and then back down to within 6 inches of the floor.... Any ideas? Thanks!!

Aircraft will sometimes cause this.

Or someone else has a remote on the same frequency. A couple years ago a friend of mine had his garage robbed by a guy using a device to open people's garage doors, basically they drove the streets testing to see if any doors would open.

What brand garage door opener ? My dad has a Chamberlain about 3 years old. When we come over in our Buick 2012 Enclave and pull up to the door the door will not function ,it gets a mind of its own. Back up about 100' and it's ok. :eyecrazy:

When I moved into my house a couple years ago one of our doors would periodically open up on its own as well. The openers are from Liftmaster and have a wall switch that is a big white button with a green light behind it. Well, one of the switches was lighting up orange instead of green. So I investigated and it turns out the two wires that connect to the switch were installed backwards. I switched the wires around and the orange light turned to green and the problem was solved.

Sometimes there is a sensitivity adjustment that will cure that. Time to get out the owner's manual. (Has it really come to this? I have to read the directions? ****!)

Maybe on of your neighbors just installed a new opener?

Years ago, my fathers neighbor was installing a new opener. It was on the same freq. as my fathers. My father and another neighbor went over to the neighbor installing the opener with my fathers remote. They proceeded to drive the poor guy nuts for a half hour or so. Everytime he would hit the button to test it, my father, with his remote in his pocket, would stop the door, or just open it at random. The poor guy was going nuts. They finally couldn't hold the laughter any longer, and had to fess up.

What type of opener and how old?
check wiring from the opener to the wall button, make sure there's no wires touching or staples shorting the wires.

Phantom opening is always a possibility, but they have not used programable transmitters for many years, so duplicated frequencies are pretty much a thing of the past.

Most door openers have rolling code technology. Very unlikely someone would have the ability to open your door. I wouldn't rule it out just unlikely. I would look for a short in the wires and the wall mounted switch. Also check all your remotes. Every time my wife set her pocketbook down the garage door would open.

+1 most of the better brands use rolling code like automotive key-fobs.

speaking of which, what kind of openers do you have and where are they? I have a key-fob opener for my newer chamberlain and the buttons sensetive enough that sometimes if I just grab a handfull of keys or stick my hand in my pocket with the keys it'll trigger. maybe the spare opener in the junk drawer gets pressed when the wife goes for scissors?

Digging up an older thread because I'm having this same issue with my NEW Chamberlain opener.

Several times recently when the spouse or I have left, we come home to an open door after knowing we've closed it.

Any of you guys experienced the same thing? We do have good range that perhaps I need to tone down. I can open it from about 100' away which is nice because the door is then full open as I'm pulling in. However, if it means I don't come home to an open door anymore I'm willing to reduce that range. The door to the house is usually unlocked and there are tools etc wide open. The house has a Rottweiler inside that may scare off most folks, but the garage is there for the taking. Glad I live on a quiet culdesac.

GD are you sure it closed correctly when you left? I have sometimes seen my door go almost all the way down, and then something trips the sensor and it goes back up. I now am in the habit to sit there watching it until it is completely closed.

Check your remotes closely for a jammed button. Daughters remote had fallen between the seats one day and when she moved the seat it pressed the button in and kinda tore some of the plastic to where the button would stay pressed down. It would randomly open or half close the door for 2 days till we figured it out. The button didn't look pressed in but was just enough to make contact. Took it apart, trimmed the plastic and all is good.

I had this happen and my opener is a throwback from the dark ages "Ambass-a-dor". No remote, no keypad, no safety sensors, just open or close. It just would open on its own. When I replace it, It should go to "Garage Door Opener Home" for the aged.

GD, I would start out fresh. Erase everything and reprogram. There is no reason why someone else should be opening your door with their transmitter!
More important, check all your wiring, staples and no wires touching, and all are connected to the correct terminals.

I had this happen twice....changed the codes on the transmitter. My local law enforcement says it's more common than people think, especially if you don't reset the factory settings

I have a chamberlain that did this to me a few times. I'm the second owner of my house so the first thing I did was erase all of the programmed clickers from the opener, and smashed the 2 the house came with with a hammer. Bought 2 new clickers, programmed and haven't had an issue since

The World War two guy I go visit every Thursday had a similar problem, his garage door would work fine for several days then it would open all by itself. We ended up replacing the opener because it was VERY old and he didn't like the remote control much anyway. Now he has a new opener that works perfectly and he likes the new remote. All is well.

This is way out in left field. We use RF remote controls. We were periodically having major issues. Turned out to be Chinese LED lighting. Now the first question tech support asks for random turn on or off issues is "did you just put in new lighting?". We can recreate it in our engineering labs. Doesn't seem to happen with American made lights.
