What product should I use the clean/prep the wood garage door after I strip and sand it prior to primer and paint application?

I have spent more Time on this project than I expected as it snowballed. We all know how that goes after getting into the project.

I used a heat gun to strip the old peeling paint and progressing through different courses of sandpaper on an orbital palm sander.

Some of the plywood panels are showing some wear and weaknesses as expected exposed to the weather on a south facing door.

This is a you basic 1940 (8x6) wood garage door?

Thanks

It sounds like you already have it prepared, after all that sanding...About all I'd do is wipe it down with mineral spirits to get the residual dust off, then prime and paint.

Stuart,

Thanks for the reply.

I did a online search at HD and Lowe’s for tack cloth and both showed out of stock.
After looking at the door while sanding I most likely will have to do some repairs to the rails and stiles. I found one bolt gone from a hinge and another bolt sheared off for one of the grab handles. I’m thinking of drilling them out and gluing in some oak Dowels to act as Dutchman’s .

Another question for this repair:

Both of the holes are in the rail and stile of the door, not the plywood panel.

1. Use oak dowels and drill through the end grain less than 1 1/2 inches or

2. Use a two part exterior Expoxy and add a backer plate inside to tighten the nuts, washers and bolts up to

Either method would work fine if the plan is to paint the door, the wood dowel will probably blend in a little better.
