Garage door quote - seems really high

So I just got a quote for garage doors:

2 9x9 Raynor Relante doors ranch style with windows

Normal tracks on one door

Tracks to follow 12/12 pitch on other door

Torsion springs/leaf bumpers on door for 12/12 pitch

Cost: $3900

Is it me or does that seem way high? I know the doors are big and the install is not standard on one door, but still doesnt seem right.

doesn't sound unreasonable to me. Get another quote or two. Are they going in a new building, or replacing existing doors? insulated?

New building, they are insulated 1 3/8 thick steel doors.

It just seems strange that I can get 9x8 door installed for like $800/door but if I go 9x9 the price jumps enormously.

I just called another company to come out and measure.

I paid 1475/door for R18 rated 10hx12w doors with 2/12 pitch tracks, installed. No windows though, I'll bet that's where your costs are.

There is easily over 2k in doors there with the windows, extra height, insulation, and special tracks. The rest is labor. Seems kind of high to me also for what amounts to a days worth of work if they work slow and meticulously (which they won't).

Have you considered installing the doors yourself? You can save a lot of cash doing it yourself. Every garage door I've ever bought, came with detailed instructions that anybody who can read and comprehend simple things can follow.
And, if you do it yourself, you can be assured that it is done right.

I just paid $1600 per door for R18 9x10, no windows. Once you get into odd sizes the costs jump enormously for a quality door.

Yeah I'm definetely considering this option for sure.

Thanks for the input everyone. It does seem like the price is high but not as bad as I originally thought.

Are you asking for a premium design or just one of the basic design types?

8 X 9 is the cutoff for standard overhead door sizes. Above that they get more expensive. Sounds like you are in the ballpark.

Basic design, no openers even. The only thing is the install of the one to follow the 12/12 pitch.

I did check online and the doors alone would be about $2200-2400. So another 1700 for labor seems a bit much.

My 8x10 with high bay and R15 insulation was $880 and I installed. My 12x12 doors also R15 were $1230.00 each and I also installed those and 3800 openers. Windows do add cost but the quote seems a bit high.

Actually, my door guy (who I've known for 10 years) tells me once you go over 8' hieght, the price really jumps. The width - not as much as a factor.

46Nash - for comparison, I'm paying $1500 installed for a 10x9 Garaga (Standard+ series), no window, no opener, track to follow 8/12 cieling pitch.
I consider that to be a good deal in my area and since I know the guy (mentioned above), I'm 110% confident in his work.

Garage doors are another one of those things that are hard to compare "apples to apples". Every manuf. does things different and they want you to believe thier way is the best. Really have to get into the nitty gritty of door construction - what techniques really matter.

I learned alot while researching doors - like for example, door #1 touts its R-18 (or whatever) rating as being far superior to door #2's R-17. The reality is, it's of little significance when you consider the thermal performance of the whole door assembly. See, the neat thing is, overhead door manufs. can advertise the R rating of a single panel, they don't have to test the performance of the whole assembly - unlike the window and door industry.

I am definetely leaning towards doing it myself at this point. I'm just trying to figure out how exactly I would follow the 12/12 pitch on the one door. I am thinking seems like I can cut the 90 degree pieces to 45 degrees or so, and then use a high lift spring, and possibly some extra pieces of track to make it all work. I guess the challenge there is winding the spring?

You order it for 12/12 pitch... and depending on the manufacturer, it comes pre-fabbed for such purposes

And no, your still using standard lift drums, springs do change... but the manufacturer will sort that for you...

We payed $750CDN for two doors - installed. 9ft wide x 7ft tall openings, windows with inserts... But they were used doors. We had big hail storms roll through and our door guys at work replaced a lot of them on insurance - these were great doors that the hail had made "shiny" spots in the paint but no dents... the spots disappeared within a year.

The money was for the labour and new hardware - but I know the installers. Get a few quotes.

I put Wayne-Dalton commercial insulated doors on my garage with no windows and the bigger of the two( 8' x 14' wide) cost $900. I installed both doors myself because they wanted $200 each to install. It wasn't hard.

I have a "plain Jane door" and when I bought the house my wife asked about changing it to a "carriage style" probably the same and a single door was 2K. I'm on long island NY, so your quate seems okay.
